I keep wondering if the canine unit ranks are slightly higher than their handler's rank in this universe or not. I know this is how it works in the US military to prevent animal abuse - if you harm the dog you're handling you are effectively assaulting a superior officer.

Actually the reason King doesn't have a problem with that is because he was living with Pete and was turned into a Dog by him so magic isn't weird to him. It doesn't imply that normal people know that magic exists in the world; however admittedly it could imply that too but I think that is too much...
