It's gotten a bit more story driven as it's gone on and some of the characters have become a bit more complex. That's probably why it seems to have changed.

Eh, well, I think a lot of people won't deny that things DID actually get a lot worse after like...2004 or so. Things have been getting a bit better, though, at least where Cartoon Network is concerned. Gravity Falls is also pretty great.
