Aww, poor Jessica. Trying so hard but there's only so much you can do.
Ink sure has a weird way of being optimistic :)

She sure knows how to use her tail, huh? That's neat. X3

first panel: No door to kick down for a grand entrance? Well then meet my feet, curtains!

It's alright Jessica. Being a hero is overrated. Instead, be a nefarious villain! Nefarious villains are much cooler. 8-)

How nice that Truck made it back, and that they have surplus medicine. It's also sweet to see Jess in the aftermath of her personal growth. I know that the trees' leaves are supposed to be gone, but what about the branches?

Normally, I'd call this a happy ending; but I get the feeling there's more to this story.

She's the hero Hallowed-Out-Tree deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

This wasn't a complete loss. Better to have a little too much than much too little when it comes to things like medical equipment. And good to see that Jess didn't have the best of intentions, yet she learned a little bit more.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who notice this, but how clever is it of her to use her tail to carry some of the supply in the first panal?
I just thought that was cool.

Poor Jessica. She tried so hard, only to find out that if she had waited, everything would have worked out. At least the field guide will come in handy!

Ink, please, learn how to rephrase things! She just went through an emotional turmoil here.

I love the second panel most of all. :D

Agreed, I don´t t think you´ll ever hear someone say "Darn it, we have too much medicine !"

Such shock on their faces! And, on an RP base, can I say I'm happy to see where that thermometer is?

And she's made it back, only to discover
that she's been beaten by wonderful Truck.
The trio look shocked and surprised -
if she wanted to be a hero, she's out of luck.

She gifts them the presents of the Opener
and sets out for home in tears
the spirit, not of Openermas but of Desolation,
means she'll be alone she fears.

It's a foolish wish on Openermas
and young Jess is our little woodland hero.
She's saved so many she doesn't know yet
as less of her friends will fall in the snow.

She can't be happy, she feels she failed
but she opened the Opener, she got him nailed
and the path to his future is now wide and bright,
a miracle that occurred near Openermas Night.

Completely forgot about that. The prayer was answered...

Now everyone will be doing it. Some god better take advantage of that!

It's sort of like being an actual medical or emergency services professional: In order for you to do your job, someone else has to have a very bad day.

I feel empathetic/sorry for Jess right now. Sure, the medicines Zack gave her can be useful in the future, but they have no immediate value. And maybe Jess wasn't expecting to be the hero, but she was sure hoping for more than the interfering bystander role.
Also she now (at least partly) knows the truth about Zack, and being late with help nullifies her chances of a good reception when/if she tells others what Zack told/explained to her.
All in all, I can understand Jessica being depressed here.

Nice to see Tum looking better, though.

Awh, poor Jessica. What a disappointment for her, even if she didn't plan to be the hero but there was a little hope that her effort would have been more significant.

Will Falstaff manage to make his way back?

I was under the impression that Zach's home was the house closest to the forest, so if Jess got her medicine from Zach, I wonder where Truck got his? The crazy old man who only speaks in limericks' place?

Love the last panel too! Ink is such a good friend :)

Yay! Christmas comic on Wednesday! Wonder if its gonna be a triple strip? :P

They probably stole the meds from another house. Which is why Falstaff got caught. Truck just managed to get away.

I figured they got it from Animal Control. Truck didn't "get away", he was allowed to leave because of his mission. Why him and not Falstaff? Falstaff lost on "foot, Roach, nuclear-bomb."

A friend who was a Hartford, Connecticut Police officer for some time phrased it this way:
Officer Friendly wrote:"You meet some very interesting people, on the worst day of their lives."
Anyway, got to love that prehensile tail. Opossums may be primitive (and the Eastern ones are pretty homely -- Jessica would be a welcomed exception here) but that tail has a life of its own.
Iceheart wrote:Normally, I'd call this a happy ending; but I get the feeling there's more to this story.
I note there is no END in the last panel; feel free to draw your own conclusions. I see Zach had Jessica keep the blanket (she's wear it cape-style in panels 1 and 3, hands it to Ink in 4). Maybe she'll feel the need to return it when Tum gets better...

And thus Jessica becomes a disciple to the Opener of Ways, learning that putting others' needs before your own is important, especially at Christmas.

Or some such gubbins

I don't know why but I find the idea of Falstaff being relocated exceedingly hilarious. I mean, I hope he makes it back, but still that got a big laugh out of me.

What's wrong with weird names? Is it really any different than a rabbit named Bugs?

From how casual people were about it, I would assume that this happens often and that he always does.

Could this indeed become a new fan-generated idea - 'Where in the World is Falstaff?'

First to make a Falstaff plushie for photographing will be forever immortalised

This is where the story diverges from where I originally expected.
Valerio is right, Truck and Falstaff doing something right really IS a miracle!
Xane wrote:I try not to think too hard about how feral/human interactions work.
I had the following dialog in my mind:
My common sense: -If animals in Housepets! have human-level intelligence (Or close to it.) why would human not realize they can find their way back through reading maps, or be reasoned with to not cause trouble in exchange of not being relocated?

The jester (Or rather, buffon.) living inside my head: -That, mon ami, is what defines Housepets! as a true, ridiculous slaptick humor strip, instead of those mundane and insipid proper comedies everyone seems to like!
Ryusuta wrote:She's the hero Hallowed-Out-Tree deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
I can already see it: "I am the night (scavenger), I am Jessica!"
gameangel147 wrote:What a way to look at things: "Don't worry soon people will be suffering again and you get another chance to help.
Truck: "Aww, don't cry, Jessica, turns out tiny Tum is allergic to pennisilin! Now is your chance to shine! : D"
Dissension wrote:It's sort of like being an actual medical or emergency services professional: In order for you to do your job, someone else has to have a very bad day.
"An apple a day means equipment and staff budgetary cuts. Eat a hamburger, instead."
