Maybe the specific "equivocation of human and animalkind" promise was thought up during this game but there was something before this game even started that they had a falling out over that leading the group (might) allow the winner to do.
Yes, we know there was a disagreement over goals, I'm just saying that it's a stretch to say that was the cause of the disagreement, given that Pete only came up with his misleadingly-worded promise (look up equivocation in the dictionary) in extremis.

Back in "It's A Wonderful Dog's Life", Pete told King that Sasha was "protected". What does the end of the cosmic game mean for her?
oh, well, Grape also asked during her dreamchat with Pete if there were Chimeras and Unicorns out there.
And there are unaccounted for players out there...
Anyone else want to bet that Karishad is the great Kitsune? They act very similarly, have never been seen together and (most importantly) Karishad has been missing for seven frames now. (Just as Pete and Dragon walked in, and right before Kitsune and Cerberus)
The story is getting good, and I even feel bad for Pete. I guess he is just misunderstood and has a different understanding and method of getting his goals accomplished. It's nice to see that type of character

Nah, he's not misunderstood. He just didn't comprehend the consequences of his actions.

'Tis a rare sight indeed!
You know, maybe this isn't the first time Cerb has helped Pete... maybe he has felt this way before, you know, when they were dating. Maybe thats why he calmed down. Just a thought though.

I think he does, I think he feels like he shouldn't have to face consequences because he's a "superior being" and he's fully aware that he's a jerk (I bet the only reason he tried to make King a Dark Paladin instead of choosing another class was to indulge in jerkery). He thinks he should always get what he wants because he's a demijerk instead of a pitiful mortal jerk like King. And that character growth doesn't apply to demijerks because he's already perfect.
I'm starting to feel sorry for Pete. I know he was quite the prick, but I don't think he really wanted anybody to get hurt. He just let his grudge/dislike/competition with Dragon get in the way of his judgement.
