WARNING: A new site is coming

So I have been promising this for years but at the moment I believe my hand is forced: I am updating the site to a new version of wordpress and everything is gonna be changed to a simpler format. Currently, I don't know if some of the features I wanted will be possible--it turned out some implementations were a lot harder than I presumed, such as multi-language feature (though I will endeavor to add something that will help).

One thing I honestly have no idea how to transfer over are old on-site comments or newsposts. If you want to save those, I'd suggest you grab them now.

That's awesome, looking ahead for the long awaited new website! :D The cast page urges an update. ;)
Welsh Halfwit wrote:That'll be trouble for the roleplays?
Of course not, since this is the forum, not the website. ;) Rick is talking about the comments present in the older strips, when was possible post comments directly in the website.

This forum will have to be updated eventually but HOPEFULLY importing is more doable since forum tables are pretty regular

Here is something I'm not certain I can do: import the hover text. This might have to be done manually. If someone could furnish a list of all comics' hovertext I would be extremely grateful.

I would be legitimately amazed if someone had the hover texts compiled.

The Alt Text Compendium theoretically has everything from the first alt text until part way through Gallifrax. The rest should all be documented in the thread for that particular strip. It'd just take time to go through everything.

We have folks with way too much time on their hands here, D-Rock :3

I have too much time on my hands, I'll give archiving the alt text a shot.

Edit: Done.

If you need help with anything at all just ask, Rick!

I think we could assign people a set of arcs from where to get the alt text and format it the same so that passing it to a database shouldn't be very hard.

I've prepared a text file of all the alt-texts of all the strips in the website. Check it here, the special characters are included and I've also fixed some missing capital letters. Download it and open it with Notepad++, so to see and copy each row in a comfortable way.

Oh, if only you'd posted a few hours earlier, I could have saved a bunch of time. Anyway, I guess we now have two copies.

Is there a way to save the site from a certain date? I'm sure there's a program for that.

It will be nice to have an updated cast page for sure, though. :)

Well depending on what you mean by "save the site from a certain date". If you want a snapshot of how a page looked some time ago, archive.org is what you're looking for. If you want to backup the whole page with all the comics, comments, forum threads and profile pictures... That's other matter that only Rick or Ikani could do (Or someone with a lot of free time and bandwidth)

I hope my current bookmark will work on the new site. If not, I do hope that we will be given a link to the new site.

The internet wayback machine might have some copies of the website. Although for what pages or how much of it, I couldn't tell you.

I'll try and provide a link to the old version of the site since it still exists for the moment.

You might recognize, if you're browsing on a large screen, that I completely resaved all of the old comics to be 20% larger. You probably won't notice on smaller browsers, but I made sure this time to use a responsive site theme which will resize itself depending on the width of your browser. Future!

I really like the new website, it's still simple like before and greatly refreshed. :D There's still a lot to do, like add a new Cast page, the social links, the comics alt-texts, and the tags. Is it possible to get the thumbnails of all the comic strips of an arc story, like it was before? Also, has been a nice surprise see the old strips bigger. ;)

Oh so it was that! I legit thought the old site just resized them smaller :D

Time to re-read the whole thing! woo!

I like the new site design! :) Needs the tags and links to the forum threads for the strips, as well as the other page tabs, but that'll be done in time. In the meantime, nice work!

I like the new look! Very clean. Could use a bit more character, but this works great as a baseline. :D

I have to say I kinda liked the shorter comic format, though! Is it on the table to do two short comics in place of a large comic periodically? Especially for one-offs?

Have to agree with Sleet - I kind of miss the custom bone and fish arrows, and the menu bar could use some fun design work. And the occasional gag bag strip would be nice touch. As Res says, brevity...

Another thing I noticed - it would help if the archives had pictures - not all of us have memorized the strips by their titles.

The background is awesome, though. Big improvement there. :)

The thing I'm planning on doing for one-offs is something like "tall" strips, which would basically be like the old strips but vertical instead of horizontal

That might be hard to publish in print, unless you put a bonus picture with every one of those... actually, with the new format, you'd probably either have to do that or have multiple one-offs in succession to fill the page.

If you go "up" from the strips before, it shows Here Come Da Bride but skips What Bwings Us Togefa Today. If you go "backwards", it skips Here Come Da Bride.

The actual error, of course, is that What Bwings Us Togefa Today is supposed to be /2013/05/29. The only reason I found it is because I was looking for Here Come Da Bride to see if Mungo was in the audience (he was!) and worked backwards from the end of the wedding arc and it wasn't there! I just wonder if any other strips have 'date collision' problems.
That's one of the things I want to know so I can fix it, or in general if any comic just has the wrong date attached if you notice it. That one should be fixed now.

Nice and clean and simple. I like it. ^^

Is that a new art style though? The colours feel less saturated and the noses aren't as shaded as usual. It looks nice though. Feels more hand-drawn. :)

Wow, it feels so weird without a Wednesday update. Not complaining - it's just a force of habit to stay up for it Tuesday nights that I should kick.

Some archive issues
(Since you have all the early guest strips removed from the line up, I've assumed you intend that all the way through)

2008
-Jul 18: Facebook TRIPs list (and link) "A Cat Isn’t Fine Either" as appearing on Jul 19 (a Saturday)
2009
-Aug 21: "My Love It Has Three Corners" should be Aug 24
2010
-Mar 1: "Threes A Crowd" appears twice (second one has the edits)
-Mar 12: "The Calling" and "You Dont Get Snacks" both refer to the same comic (I assume title changed at some point) (second one spells "till" correctly)
-Jun 18: "Free Will Will Free You" appears twice (first one has removed dialog)
-Oct 24: "The Works" was released on Oct 25 (a Monday)
-Oct 26: "House Of A Thousand Nightmares" was released on Oct 27 (a Wednesday)
2013
-Apr 24: "Shopping Block" should be Apr 26
-Aug 2: "Four On The Floor" appears twice (first one has the edit)
2014
-Jun 9-14: These are guest strips (Jun 12 "Sniff Snuff Snap" and "Spot The Movie" appear, when only "Spot The Movie" appeared previously)
-Sep 10: "Consolation Prize" and "Consultation Prize" both refer to the same comic (Forum thread title is the second)
-Sep 17-23: These are guest strips
2015
-Jan 16-23: These are guest strips
-Jun 5: This is a guest strip
2016
-Mar 23 - Apr 1: These are guest strips
-Apr 18 & 20: "The Crunchatorium" is listed twice (appeared on Apr 20)
-Jun 19 - Jul 2: These are guest strips ("Outfoxed" is listed as Jun 19 but appeared Jun 20 (a Monday))

Also 2015, Jul 15-20, the images are broken? Firefox, Chrome, and Opera won't display them.

I did remove early guest strips but decided to leave them in later on; I kinda wish I remembered where older guest strips went
