Okay, so my question is why is the one and only specific thing they're not allowed to remember is that they'll live for 60 years? It seems needlessly trolling, even for them. Could save them a lot of time, effort, and (literally) wasted life if they knew they couldn't succeed.

60 years, minimum. I think the reason why is because it's not like mortals have a death clock like on Futurama; no one knows how long we have to live, and thus Pete and Dragon don't get to know either. Also I reckon different animals have different lifespans.
