That is definitely less subtle than just making a phone call. Still a better strategy than what they used in “Oliver and Company”.
How much do you want to bet Max still has these letters tucked away somewhere?
I’m starting to wonder if Max is telling the others this or is this one of those personal flashbacks solely for the viewer. Grape and Sabrina will be like “Max, what are you doing? You’ve been staring into space for the last twenty minutes.”

I feel upset for Rufus. Max was treated so well by him but then just abandons him!

I'm sure it's a flashback for the benefit of the viewer, Fenrir.
Re: 2019/02/18 - How Much Is That Kitten In The Grungy Cardb
I can hear the sads coming from around the corner like a truck. One those days Rufus just...stopped sending letters. And Max probably never knew why. At least, not until he met Rufus again as a celestial.

Is it me or does it sound like Rufus is trying to lay on the guilt with that letter? “You don’t hafta reply” and “I got plenty to do” I mean it’s not exactly subtle. Just tell Max you want to hear from him dude. Or you know call?

What's with the "Wait...what?!" in the title text? There is a lot more white on the back of Rufus's head in this strip than his angel incarnations. In his old age, Rufus must have gone gray, er merle.
There isn't any captioning by present-day Max, so he probably isn't saying this out loud.fenrirblack wrote:I’m starting to wonder if Max is telling the others this or is this one of those personal flashbacks solely for the viewer. That’s what I’m assuming but you never really sure until it’s all over. The obvious scenario is Max drifted off into these flashbacks as he stood in the doorway with Grape and Sabrina calling to him to finish the story. But it could shift with him telling them these events but instead of a voiceover we get the letters. It all comes down to the director’s choice. I swear I’ve seen something like this where the flashback happens while the character is narrating the events but you don’t realize it until we shift back to the present.Champion Wallace wrote:There isn't any captioning by present-day Max, so he probably isn't saying this out loud.fenrirblack wrote:I’m starting to wonder if Max is telling the others this or is this one of those personal flashbacks solely for the viewer. It just seems like a shame for Grape and Sabrina not to hear the whole story after the grief they gave him and after they called him back to finish.

And the letter continues with the story
as Max and Rufus’ bonds grow;
the love they had for each other here
is clearly still on show.
What happened to make him forget
his sainted doggy pal?
What made him the faintly calloused kitty?
What built up memories’ wall?
Max didn’t want to leave his side
at any point it seems,
even if a safe, new, home to live in
was the stuff of his dreams.

Nice that Rufus was able to get an address for Max after his adoption. The ol'fella had good penmanship, too. Rick's really plunkin' the heartstrings on this one. Poor Rufe.

Oh dear.

Jeff cannot resist that Maxwell-in-a-box adoption trick and happy face ;_;
On a funny note, anyone get the impression that Rufus spoiled Maxwell at the end of this comic? x3
He essentially got him in a box, acting adorable and adopted by Jeff, which lead to Maxwell thinking he could go through life with his good looks and charm. :3

Looks like we have the first appearance of Reuben Sandwich in over 10 years. I'd also assume that his kids wouldn't have been born yet except for the oldest daughter who might still be a baby or a young toddler.
I wonder which Sandwich is older: Earl or Reuben. I wanna say Reuben because Rufus is much older than Peanut and Grape and has 5 kids.

I know what you’re saying, but I’m chuckling at the unintentional compliment to Rufus’s... let’s say charm for lack of a better oneAmazee Dayzee wrote:Looks like we have the first appearance of Reuben Sandwich in over 10 years. Poor Rufus, considering we saw a bit of Max as a kitten around when these letters likely came... he probably was trying to forget his barn cat time, and he’s clearly a little upset about that in the present day if that’s why he wasn’t replying. Heck, Rufus coming back solely to see Max was okay makes a lot more sense now... if it’s something he never really got confirmed in life. Man that’s a depressing thought

Well, Max does have a bit of a crush on himself.....
Re: 2019/02/18 - How Much Is That Kitten In The Grungy Cardb
The letters continue. Nice scenes of new Max's journey finding his new owner, and Rufus is such a good dog. Don't worry much, Rufus, probably Max found a nice home and a careful owner (that's Jeff). The letter is a bit weird because Rufus wonders if Max will reply, but then writes that hasn't to do it because he's busy. If Max has Rufus' number, then is fine.

That's because Max's needs seem to be simple and easy whereas the ferret's needs a grandiose and way too complex.
