The "I don't understand this comic" thread

This is a thread where you will ask for explanation of an old comic, that has been discussed before you got the chance to ask. It can be the joke that you don't really understand, or the importance of the comic for the story, or anything. The only rule is that the comic isn't discussed right now in the "The Comic" forum.

So yeah, I'll start.... I don't really understand the joke in this comic:

What does the salesman have to do with them buying the pet door?

Never understood it either.

The salesman could be really bad:

"yeah, it easily keeps pests out" As in, he actually believed it would

or really good:

"yeah, it easily keeps pests out" As in, he lied to get them to buy it.

what they mean is either the salesman was really good at his job(selling) because he sold them a pet door when they can clearly use regular doors and don't need one, not sure about being bad at his job though, that's how i understood it but i might be wrong

Dr. Prower wrote:and they need a pet door because.....?
I think that's the point they don't. The joke is that the salesman sold them something they didn't need.
Edit: So the salesman is either good at his job because he sold them something they didn't need or bad at it because he didn't know they didn't need it.

The catnip exploded in his face.

Exploded.

In his face.

Nitro can be used to make explosions, and that is what Bino presumably used for the catnip bomb. Sasha, having a dog's good nose, smelled the catnip and the nitro because King smelled like an exploded kitty.

Especially panel 3 :?
And on the second panel, Is that a BIG mouse? :|

The creature in the second panel is actually an arctic fox.

That strip was a birthday gift for one of Rick's friends, you kind of have to know the guy to give it a little more context. He's a notorious punster.

Then how come your gravatar for the main comic resemble one of these foxes?

@Alex M.

Every panel is a bad joke (except the first)

2: A snowy TV refers to lots of static. One adjusts the antennae on the TV to get better reception. Since the fox is a "snowy fox", he's adjusting the ears (bad pun)
3: According to Rick in the comments section, he randomly grabbed the guy's tail, "Here, hold this" :?
4: A Java plug-in is a computer reference to the Java programming language, but he is trying to plug a pot of coffee (aka "java") in, so this is also a really bad pun

can someone help me understand this comic?

What dragon and Pete are arguing about is confusing to me, namely how did dragon stop him from getting "the cat" and the moving the "temple" part?

forgive me if this is a dated question and has already been asked or if I missed something from an earlier strip.

Actually, this has never been explained. We gather that "The Cat" is Grape (since Grape is scribbled out on Pete's sheet as the avatar). And the temple is probably where Pete was trapped until Zach let him out. But we don't know the details. ;)
Hope this was about as uninformatively informative as it looks to me

Basically Tarot told Grape that Pete was a bad guy which stopped Grape from trusting him and wanting to be his Avatar. And as for the moving the temple part, it was not originally in Babylon Gardens and was somewhere else (where we do not know but I suspect somewhere in the Middle East, possibly Egypt.) someone moved it from there to Babylon Gardens where The Cosmic Nerds then moved the game.

This also means if you think about it that Tarot is most likely not from Babylon Gardens herself because Pete didn't know who moved the Temple (or that someone did at all, until he woke up.) and Dragon did. Meaning that Dragon was out of the Temple (or her Temple if they have separate ones) and already in Tarot, when some one was moving it, who was from where the Temple was originally.

thanks, that makes sense.

one more though this is something minor, Is Bino and Maxwells' "Dad" Jeff or Jake? he's named "Jake" by Ryan in his conversation with Fido but is listed in the tags and cast page as "Jeff".

I believe that Rick changed his name later in the comic, but never edited the earlier comics to match the new name. Something like that, I think...

I never understood this comic. I don't know if it's because I watched Scooby Doo only dubbed in my first language, Portuguese, or because I don't get the gender reference.

and this one:

I don't even get what they're talking about.

I didnt get the first one either, but the second one is referring to the easter egg hunt mentioned in the previous comic. Its funny cuz despite a building being on fire and the neighborhood being destroyed, it was "better then last year" and apparently went well

But why put the house on fire??

Look at the panels! You have eggs everywhere, splattered or not, you have a window on the house in the second panel that's broken, you have the ground that's been dug up with shovels, and you have a house that's on fire. What it's implying is that the dogs are super-destructive, and yet it was still a better turn-out than the previous year.

Eggs in the floorboards/walls?

It doesnt matter why, it's simply inserted to show how crazy the dogs were being

Well, at least in English, Scooby Doo has an extreme speech impediment. Whenever he says his name he says, "Rooby Roo!" or that's about the best transliteration of it ;)
So, Duke thinks he's calling himself "Ruby Roo" indicating he has some identity issues. Species issues because of the "Roo" (short for kangaroo) and gender issues because of the "Ruby" (a female name).

well about the "Jinx" stuff...
i kind of don't get it what are Bino and Tiger laughing at, according to dictionary "jinx" means "bad luck" or "bringing bad luck upon someone"
or does it mean the mouse "Jinx" which is related to "Tom and Jerry"?
or else...?

confused@@

"Jinx" in this context is essentially a recognition that they both said the same thing simultaneously without meaning to. I'm not sure how it got this position in language, but it did.

It's something silly people made up, primarily in the US (I think). If you say the same thing at the same time, yell jinx right after and then some random action after. It's kind of...odd, now that I think about it. But it's just something I did when I was younger.

Beaten by the Captain.

thanks guys, according to your guidance i finally found it that wikipedia did described about this kind of game XDD

Well, I dunno if the jinx thing is exclusive to the US, but back when I was in high school, whenever two persons said the same thing at the same time, one must quickly pat the other to claim ownership of the said thing (I think)

It's rather dangerous though, I've seen someone been slapped to the ground while doing this. And the funny part is, they both still laughed about the whole thing.

My question is about the alt text,
It's said "At this point, the people who wonder about the setting details will be torn: was the movie Wolfman about a guy who turns into a regular wolf, or was it just inexplicably racist towards Greek people?"

Q1:what is regular wolf meaning? The man may be change in wolf regularly like in the full moon day?

Q2:inexplicably racist towards Greek people? Is this basis on any allusion?

Thanks for your help^^
