Name: Ray Stevens

Species: Russian Blue cat

Neighbourhood: Applegate

Appearance: Thick, even, bluish-grey coat; green eyes; green collar with tag shaped to the contours of the brass-coloured trumpet motif on its front side. Tall for his breeding and just slightly gangly.

Personality/Back story: Ray’s life is one big musical and his personality and that of his owners can be described in one word: exuberant. His owners are a happily married middle-aged couple who dote on Ray as much as they can as the child they could never have. Both naturally highly adept at music and both unable to support themselves financially through their talents, they’d spent the last fifteen years working as rubbish collectors, driving their truck around early in the morning and singing their guts out to the radio and to each other. Having travelled through Applegate on their honeymoon, Ray’s owners had instantly fallen in love with the charming little place and fifteen years later they’d been overjoyed to win really, really big in the lottery, finally being able to put their financial problems behind them and achieve their dream of opening their own music shop and musical tutoring service in Applegate.

Ray is just as talented as his owners when it comes to music, and he enjoys playing show tunes, swing, jazz and pop. He’s been taught to play the trumpet that used to belong to his dad and the piano but he’s also a natural singer and dancer and this lends him an instinctive feel for rhythm so he can often be found drumming a beat on anything that comes to paw or singing if he has no other instrument around.

Energetic and friendly, he’s still in the prime of his life and in perfect health and loves to perform at every opportunity, knowing songs appropriate for most any occasion. He never says never and rarely sits still. He and his owners are some of those rare pets/people who are genuinely contented with their lot in life and who allow their happiness to rub infectively off onto others. He’s always happy to share and to pass on his knowledge and love of music to other people and especially to other pets. Others of his breed are known to be fierce hunters but Ray prefers to sing to the mice as, in his opinion, any audience is a good audience. Ray was also stoked when his owners won the lottery because they surprised him with a jazz organ which is something that he’d always dreamed of playing. He’s named for one of his parents’ favourite jazz musicians – Ray Charles.

Name: Lillian “Lilly” Hughes

Species: Ferret

Age: 7 human years, 24.5 pet years

Neighbourhood: Applegate

Appearance: Lilly is a cinnamon ferret. She has a pale brown head and body with darker limbs and tail. She has brown eyes but no mask. She wears a pair of very dark sunglasses and if you were to look underneath them you’d see that her pupils are completely white. Her collar is brown and the tag is a white plastic lily. She wears a small shoulder satchel and carries a red and white cane with a wrist strap on one end and a white ball on the other. She’s also short, even for a ferret, having been the runt of the litter.

Personality: Lilly is completely blind and has been since birth. She never lets it get in the way of a having a good time though. Despite living in perpetual darkness she’s as bright and active as any other ferret. She’s fluent in Braille and pretends to be fluent in guitar. In fact, pretending is her specialty. She’s an actress through and through and dreams of one day performing on Broadway. Outspoken and friendly, she’ll get along with most anyone and take virtually anything in her stride. She’s memorized a variety of musicals and plays and enjoys quoting from them and even singing although she’s not musical in the slightest. When she’s not acting she loves to read and she loves to explore. She finds her ears and nose can tell her a lot about the world around her but she also has a secret way to “see” things that she’ll use on the odd occasion if she gets lost or stuck. She’s never shared her secret with anybody though. After all, who would believe in real magic?

Back Story: Owned by a young couple with a toddler, Lily was brought to Applegate when the family moved, desiring to raise their child away from the dangerous and rough streets of their home city. Due to the dangers in the city, especially for someone who’s blind, Lily had not been allowed out of her yard much so she’s looking forward to being able to roam and explore and make a few friends. She loves her family but she’s always wanted to socialize with other pets. She’s also recently been given a phone with voice activation software so she can use it to call or message people or use the GPS function without ever having to read the screen. Usually it works fine. Usually. She’s slightly unsure of herself, being that it’s a new area and she has no idea where anything is or what to expect and won’t see any potential dangers coming but being her irrepressible self her excitement and enthusiasm far outweigh her nerves.

Other notes: She can do a kind of "psychic echolocation" whereby she bounces a thought off other pets and uses their understanding of their surroundings to help her work out where she is. She can't look through their eyes as the sights would mean nothing to her but she can use their understanding of where they are in 3D space to get a feel for what's around her.

I think that was only a "think about it and not make a decision yet" type deal, I think it was still on the table. unless I'm wrong and they did definitively say no
