That's not really a rules-related question! However, the equivalency of 3.5 "pet years" to one "human year" was extrapolated from Rick's statement that animals in the Housepets! universe live about twice as long as in ours.

Oops! My bad I'm just trying to figure something out. So pets could live to 40 years old in human years then? Or a few more years?

If a breed lived 12-14 years in our universe, it would live 24-28 years in the Housepets! universe. If there are dog or cat breeds which live for 20 or more years, then yes, they could theoretically live in excess of 40 in the comic's universe.

I just came back to this place and I'm pretty used to cussing in real life and on other forums, so I'm just wondering, to what degree, if any, are the users allowed to use profanity? Like what could be considered acceptable.

That's easily answered by checking out the forum rules.
In the forum rules, I wrote:
  • Housepets! is a family-friendly comic. Please do not post material that would be inappropriate for children. As an example, pregnancy is fine, but pornography is not. Likewise, graphic violence, politics, religion, drug use, illegal activity, profanity, and other potentially controversial topics are not allowed.
This is the first bullet point from the [ NEW Forum Rules ]. If you're looking for examples of permissible profanity, the best example I can give is: none. The forums have a pretty well-stocked profanity filter, but if you try to cheat it, your posts will be edited or deleted and, as with any violations, your account may be warned or banned for habitual violations.

If you have to ask yourself if a word is a swear word, it probably is too dirty for this forum. Better safe than sorry, but if you have a question about an individual word feel free to ask a moderator in private!

Also welcome back, Dr. Prower! I always liked you. :D

Thanks, Sleet. It's good to be back (and good to be remembered ^-^ )

Next question: How do I place a title or phrase or whatever on top of my avatar? I remember being told how to before, but it's been too long.

That can only be done by an administrator and is currently a perquisite of moderator rank. We've discussed offering a custom title as a contest prize, though.

As long as it's not belittling, offensive, political, or vulgar, go to town.
(in short, don't use it in a way which will hurt other forum member's feelings)

I'd say that, as sarcasm generally requires an intent to inflict pain on the target, it's right out. Facetiousness, which is playful and silly, may be acceptable... but tread lightly, please, as it's easy to hurt and offend without the nonverbal cues we typically rely on to decode intent.

It is true if you are not a moderator. I'm still unsure why that's an exception, but apparently it is.

I'm honestly not even sure why that is. I guess Rick hates me and wants you to have more posts than me? *shrugs*

So, um, I have a few questions (which is probably normal considering the day I left was the day the new rules and structure came into place... I'll probably be here often

The first is when it's okay to bump or rekindle a topic. If all I'm going to say is, I don't know "red!" on a topic that hasn't been active in over a month, is that okay? Or should it be left to die? Is it any different if I'm going to say something like "[quote of some previous post]If you consider the 11th arc, Bino shows he can be considerate in that respect, so I think things might turnout favorably" on a topic that is just as old?

Also, I've noticed all the topics I've started have been closed during my, er, forum hiatus. Would it be OK to request reopening any one of those? Would that count as bumping a post that's too old? Would it be better to start a new topic?

Since there is no inline reply option on forums, I tend to reply with a lot of quote boxes. But I know that can irk some people. Does the moderation team consider there should be a limit on the number of posts replied to in a single post?

Lastly (and probably more obviously) is what I'm doing with my new posts right now acceptable? I mean, putting the image with the "state" of my avatar at the beginning of my post (as a substitute for the use of an alternate avatar, a practice for which i was widely in the comments section)

Thanks in advance and excuse the bother

Common forum nettiquite is that you should only bump a dead topic (meaning one that hasn't been replied to in a couple weeks) if you have something which will actually continue the discussion in a new direction. For example, "Oh, that's cool!" is not something that should be posted in a dead topic, while "Well, to re-examine this, I have some new information which drastically changes the discussion" is fine. This scales a little depending on how long ago the last post was: it's more acceptable to revive a month-dead topic than one from a few years back. Same goes for quoting old posts. It's also considered proper to revive old threads instead of starting a new thread when you're tying to rekindle the same topic with new information, like when I bumped my several-month-dead topic about my video-game to post a recent progress update.

Just think about whether you're contributing to the discussion when you revive old posts.
Lastly (and probably more obviously) is what I'm doing with my new posts right now acceptable? I mean, putting the image with the "state" of my avatar at the beginning of my post (as a substitute for the use of an alternate avatar, a practice for which i was widely in the comments section)
I don't know about the rules, but no one else does that as far as I know. It breaks the page flow up a little if you ask me...

It's perfectly okay to do that. Nothing wrong with giving your own posts character!

Just don't post huge images, which would significantly slow the pages down.

Well, no. they're all about the same size (100 pixels, I think? The one further up on this post is an exception) and half of them is transparent background anyway.

I'd put them on the side to avoid the disruptive effect (I don't like calling too much attention to myself), but of course, there's no BB markup for that.

Yeah their size is just fine. Don't worry yourself.

and to answer your question about reopening your old topics, that depends. If your topic was a discussion of something specific like a project or something of yours, feel free to ask about getting it reopened. If it was just a general discussion about a topic, like the video games topic, it might be more beneficial to start a new topic unless someone else has already done so in the meantime.

at least that's what I think.

Check the first post of the "Pet Friendly Main OOC" if you want to join a Pet Friendly RP. The information's a bit long and bloated, but you can ask any RP-related questions in that thread.

*Makes a note to finish that RP-Rules thread he started, 'cause this was in there...*

Umm.. I have deleted one question that is posted on comic comment thread because it's too risky for PG rating..

- Why Jack's right hand is amputated? Was he had an accident or somthing?
- Is it possible to import these comic books overseas? Especially Asia because I lived in Indonesia.
- When you think Bruce and Roosevelt (Kangaroos), Truck and Falsaff (Raccoons) will appeared again in the comic?
- Could you tell Rick that I want some more characters sketches? Because I need to learn how to draw them. :) Oh, and also tell him that I'm veemonlover from deviantArt, say thanks for his advice! :D
- I could translate this comic if I have time, but I'm Asian so could I posted Asian languages translations?

That's it! Well, I hope sometime I'll be selected as a mod in this thread. If it happens, I'll be very happy! :D Thx..

Well, some of these questions are better suited for the comic section, like the missing arm and when the background characters will appear again. (And the answer for both is that no one knows.)

Yes, you can buy the books and have them shipped overseas. I've never bought one, and even if I did I live in the United States, but I know at least one of the forum members that lives in Italy has bought the books.

I can't help you with the character sketches. I guess Rick will do more if he wants to and has the time, but I can't tell you for sure.

And we have a place here specifically for comic translations. http://www.housepetscomic.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=6
If you want to try translating the comic, I would try PMing Copper. He's the one who would know what's going on in that part of the forum.

This might seem like a stupid question, but how do you put a userbar on your signature?

Re: Ask A Moderator

Posted: Fri May 03, 2013 8:54 pm
by Some Guy
There are no stupid questions, dude! I'm not a mod, but I can help. Upload the sig image you want to an image hosting site. I use Photobucket. Copy the direct link to the pic and paste it between image tags in the signature space on your profile.

Re: Ask A Moderator

by JeffCvt
Well, I'll give a more detailed explanation for future reference.

To add a userbar, you first need to get the URL of it. If you're adding a userbar that already exists, this is simple enough. Simply right-click it and hit 'Copy image URL' (Or it'll be something similar to that anyway. I don't know if it's the same in Chrome as everywhere else)

If you are adding a userbar that you made, it's a little more complex than that. You need to first upload it to a place that will give it a URL. I recommend Photobucket, but there are other places you can do this as well. After that, there are a few ways to get the URL for the image on that site. I won't go into detail about those, as it's pretty easy to figure out.

Once you have the URL for the image, go to the place where you can edit your signature and paste it in where you want it. Now, this step is important, after pasting, you must highlight the entire URL and then click the Img button. This will make it appear as the image and not just a link to the image.

And you're done. Have a happy time adding things to your signature.

Note: If you make your own userbar, there is a size limit. I'm not sure what it is off of the top of my head, but just be warned.

I can help you there. First off, if it's Pet Friendly, the rules are explained at the beginning of the Main OOC, and if it's not, the rules are explained in the OOC for that particular non-PF RP. Basically, you just make a character sheet based on the template given and post it in the OOC for the RP you want to join.

If you need more help, ask in the OOC: that's a bit better for specialized info...
