Housepets! on paper?
Housepets! on paper?
I think Rick should try and publish a HP book, including ORIGINAL strips and sketches that nowhere else would be published. I'd totally buy it!! Who with me?
Re: Housepets! on paper?
So. It was my understanding that a combination of getting all the prints actually printed was expensive, let alone (1) high enough resolution to work on paper and (2) in colour. (3) Actually getting it published was all kinds of problematic, too. Though I'm sure now that it's someone else that said that since I looked and can't find Rick saying it.
I was going to make a joke but then I did.

Depends on how much would it cost.valerio wrote:I think Rick should try and publish a HP book, including ORIGINAL strips and sketches that nowhere else would be published. I'd totally buy it!! Who with me?
Re: Housepets! on paper?
I'd buy it... if it had Cast pages on the end, with all the characters drawn!
The site should have that, too....

I could manage to pay up to $50-60.00 for a neat edition with original exclusive artwork, full cast etc. Paypal will do, thanx

$50-60? Ouch. If I had that much spare money around I'd buy it too thoughvalerio wrote:I could manage to pay up to $50-60.00 for a neat edition with original exclusive artwork, full cast etc. Paypal will do, thanx

I have attempted to put together a book, but getting all the high-res images together would take a while in itself.

so? it would still be worthwhile, right? after putting in all that hard work you will eventually gain from it so if you ask me i think its worth it.rickgriffin wrote:I have attempted to put together a book, but getting all the high-res images together would take a while in itself.

Yeah, but Rick has a lot of ongoing projects, not to mention university-related stuff and everyday life (including down time). I imagine that this is not terribly high on his current list of priorities.
Another issue is fitting so many high-resolution images into a PDF file without causing it to crash. Or so I have been told.
I would totally buy such a book, though.

chill, man, nobody diktated Rick an agenda. it was an idea, and it would help him raise some nice money if well-played. He could also ask help to some other webcomic author on how to manage such a project.

Less now: there is a new type of PDF that preserves image quality.Dissension wrote:Another issue is fitting so many high-resolution images into a PDF file without causing it to crash. Or so I have been told.
The real problem is that the book will cost as it would be entirely in colors while the first images are in black and white (and Refur project only deals with images in low quality).

Besides what I have now said earlier in the topic (woo edit button), I agree with Dissension and do not think he needs to 'chill'. *Giggles*

I don't think that's a problem, and Lulu does good printings for not a completely stupid amount.
But in order to do this, I will have to finish cover art, then sort my TIF files (though a high-res JPEG seems to be fine for Lulu) then write some stuff (maybe? I dunno what I'd put in the book besides the comics and sketches)

How about some tutorials on drawing? Something like "How to draw Peanut in five minutes"...rickgriffin wrote:I dunno what I'd put in the book besides the comics and sketches

If someone like F.bach is able to release a print version than it can't be too hard.

If you have too many sketches or if you want to do too many things, why not make two different books?rickgriffin wrote:I don't think that's a problem, and Lulu does good printings for not a completely stupid amount.

In case I did not make this clear enough in my previous post, I would buy a Housepets! book in a heartbeat. I just wanted to provide a glimpse into why I didn't think there'd be one terribly soon, not attack anyone.

Re: Housepets! on paper?
What if you don't use a print on demand service? It would require a bit of investment but with the way housepets is steadily growing it will definitely show a return. Attend a con or two and you'll probably gain a ton more readers and sell out your stock of books with over 250 strips it would require a lot of time to sort through everything and lay it out and what not, but it would definitely be worth it.
Why not take pre-orders? I'd definitely pre-order one.. heck maybe even two!!!!

Re: Housepets! on paper?
Because not doing a print on demand thing means that I'll have to do a lot of work one top of putting the book together, and my goal is to do projects, not to organize my merchandise. I'd rather either do POD or professional publishing and not do self-publishing.
I guess if I had a business partner I might consider self-publishing, but I don't!

Re: Housepets! on paper?
Hey Rick, I just found something that may be helpful if you do want to make HP into a book: http://www.kickstarter.com/
This lets you set up projects that people can donate to, however you have to give them things in return I guess (I only have a general understanding of how it works), such as people who donate $5-10 get their name mentioned in the book, 10-25 get that and a signed post card, 25-50 gets that and a copy of the book, 50-100 gets fan art (and you can limit the number of donators who can donate in a category I think). Just a thought.
Might be worth putting it up if it's something you wanna do.
