Yeh, but Captain Palgrave is going to be ticked off if he finds out some scurvy animals have been holding out on him.

Edit: And Blacks' luck is *zero*? And there's a minimum of *two*?

Someone needs to update his stats

PS: I'm kind of waiting on Tack's response to being drafted into helping the project he's spying on.

I'm pretty sure historical galleons didn't have underwater doors. :)

Actually they did, when hips are under construction in quite a few places workers would build the ship and use doors underneath to bring ballast of rock and other things into the ship itself. especially Spanish boats. the way they did this is smaller ships allowed people to use the place for hiding if they knew it was there. Although many didn't know some pirates did and used the doors to there advantage to attack from the inside.

This is a British "race built" galleon. I've been Googling and these boats seemed to be primarily cargo ballasted (ballast in the cargo hold, so it can be replaced by heavy cargo like ... ahem ... treasure).

*type type type...search search search* hmmm ok but still theres no harm in having one that leads to an extra gap. look into the british ship in National treasure it had a small hidden gap within the ship leading to an extra hold.

Well, it was repaired by smugglers and other ne'er-do-wells at Castillo Pato, so who knows what they did to it... but in that case Captain Palgrave definitely knows about it, 'cos he was one of them.

Yeah, Hollywood is probably not the best source of factual information.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Captain knows of a few secret compartments though.

The only place I could see a door like that would be in the stern, and leading to a flooded compartment outside the hull proper. And it couldn't be far below the waterline, because of the way the stern forms into the supports for the pintle.

To actually have one in the load-bearing hull would be extremely difficult without seriously weakening the ship, and if it was an effective watertight door it probably couldn't be opened against water pressure.

Anyway, if there's a smuggler's hold accessible from outside the ship, the captain knows about it.

You know, if we're using that galleon reference pic as a map. It wouldn't hurt to have most of the major rat places marked.

The keel would be a single, solid spar underneath/built into a solid hull, correct? So the lowest the Bilgerats could be would be on the steerage deck. Or is there a hold underneath the steerage deck? They'd more likely be in a hollow floor space between the steerage and cargo decks unless there's a hold which is not marked on that map...

Here's the layout I envisioned for this galleon:

Poop deck
Upper sterncastle [captain's cabin, owner's cabin, chart room] - quarter deck - gap - forecastle deck
Lower sterncastle [officers, crew, and paying passengers] - main deck - forecastle [galley, storage and sometimes paying passengers] - bow
Gallery [crew, storage, etc] - gun deck - forward stowage
Upper hold [storage, crew, steerage passengers, powder room, high value goods, open to lower hold]
Lower hold [heavy goods, ballast, steerage passengers, partially floored, open to bilges]
Bilges [ballast, sometimes used for durable heavy goods]

In practice crew may bunk anywhere in the holds, but the official quarters are in the sterncastle.

The sterncastle is two level, with a small quarter deck. The captain's cabin is smaller than typical, so the first officer's cabin is used as a chart room, and the owner's cabin is used as storage and to hold wild cats.

There are hatches in the main deck and gun deck for hold access. It's possible that the gun deck was a late addition to the plans.

Rats may be everywhere there's a gap big enough to fit. The main nests are in the sterncastle, in the forward stowage, and in the bilges.

Anything like this?

Although with an extra layer in the bottom for the bilges.
According to google, that's a Spanish "Manila Galleon" of the type which routinely sailed between the Phillipines (Manila) and Mexico (New Spain) in the 16th and 17th centuries.

I actually did not read that as being an upper gun deck since it's essentially the same as the:
Argent wrote:Lower sterncastle [officers, crew, and paying passengers] - main deck - forecastle [galley, storage and sometimes paying passengers] - bow
anyway.

I mean this boat is not as heavily armed. It's longer and narrower than a Spanish galleon, built more for speed and maneuverability than power.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Like the picture above but a bit smoother and sleeker, with maybe a sharp prow and shallow draught to enable greater speed and manouverability.

Since things seem to have quietened down, I'll do a timeskip to early afternoon Saturday morning unless there's objections. That should be enough time for the galleon to reach the islands.
