The first telephone was pretty useless untill someone invented the second telephone.
Also you had to shout very loudly to make yourself heard while using it.

Mar 10, 2008 – A Boston lab assistant has the dubious distinction of being the first worker ever summoned to his boss' office on the phone. "Mister Watson, come here, I want you." Watson later recounted that Bell had spilled battery acid and had called for him over the phone with these words.

Ah that's good. That call was a bit... awkward out of context. =P

"In between surviving multiple point-blank-range assassination attempts and a failed kidnapping in which he emerged alive from the burning wreckage of a battleship his own air force had just bombed, [Field Marshall] Pibulsongkram decided that Thailand needed noodles that would advance the country’s industry and economy." So, Pad Thai was created by the Thai military as a cheap and patriotically Thai dish just before World War II.

That's not useless! Also it's imaginary, not irrational. The reason they use j is because i is already used to represent current, so it'd be confusing if they used the standard symbol for the square root of -1.

You are quite correct. It is imaginary and not irrational. My mistake. ;)
And it is useless if you aren't studying/working as an engineer or physicist.

The loudest recorded purr from a domestic cat was 67.7dB - about the same as a car or a handheld electric mixer.

Saturn is so not-dense that if you could find a bath big enough, fill it with water and chuck in Saturn it would float.

Venus's atmospheric pressure and temperature profile is such that an Earth air-filled vessel could theoretically float in the sky with no propulsion.

During the early stages of the solar system, the asteroid belt could have been a site of a forming planet. Gravitational perturbations from the planet Jupiter gave them too much energy to clump together, instead, their collisions tend to be violent and they get shattered. This eventually caused most of the mass of the body to be lost, some eventually crashing into other planets like the Earth.

I reckon it's a bit unfair that Pluto is no longer a planet.

Sorry, Argent, but that's not true. What happens is that the skin loses its elasticity and tone and pulls back from around the nails and follicles giving the appearance of extra length. It's a common misconception.
See here for more info on the topic.

Ratty from The Wind In The Willows is actually a water vole, not a rat.

it's creepy either way.

The Least Weasel is the world's smallest carnivore. It has to eat 1/3 of its body weight every day... mostly mice and voles, but it can kill rabbits as much as ten times its size.

The word "panjandrum" comes from a piece of nonsense prose created by Samuel Foote to stump a famed mnemonicist: So she went into the garden to cut a cabbage-leaf to make an apple-pie; and at the same time a great she-bear, coming up the street, pops its head into the shop. "What! No soap?" So he died, and she very imprudently married the barber; and there were present the Picninnies, and the Joblillies, and the Garyulies, and the grand Panjandrum himself, with the little round button at top, and they all fell to playing the game of catch-as-catch-can till the gunpowder ran out at the heels of their boots.

Vertigo and acrophobia are often confused. Acrophobia is the fear of heights. Vertigo is a feeling of nausea/unbalance/disorientation which can be brought on by many things including but certainly not limited to heights. They should not be used interchangeably.
