Re: I Just Can't Even...
So this morning my mom and I decided to go on a quick day out on a train to a town right on the outskirts of Greater Manchester called Stalybridge.
Now, the suberb where we live, called South Reddish, has a station that only has a single train track running through it for reasons I don't really understand. (trust me, it could very easily have two tracks running through there)
A train that goes to Stalybridge goes through it once a week, on Fridays at about half 9 in the morning.
So we're there on the station, waiting for the train to arrive. I have me camera with me and am snapping some butterflies flitting about on a little flower garden the station has.
When all of a sudden, something jumps out from the undergrowth.
What the heck it was doing there I have no idea. we had no idea it was even hiding there until I startled it out.
It ran off too quick for me to take a pic with my camera, though.
I was stood there just going "WHAT?!?" in disbelief many times over.
That makes 9 foxes I've seen in my entire life.
When I came home I came up with a little poem to mark the occasion.
Foxy, foxy, number 9,
On the Reddish Southern Line,
Ran too quick for me to snap,
Well, oh, drat, double drat, triple drat,
Oh, drat.

Then you must be really lucky to see 9 foxes where you live!

I would be REALLY lucky if one actually holds still long enough for me to capture on camera.

You should go on a fox photo safari in that area. Maybe you'll find more. :3

Well the thing is, knowing my luck, I see one when I least expect it like I did at that station, but when I'm actually hunting them down for snaps they're gonna be absolutely nowhere.

What you need to do, Thom, is to make sure you're carrying a camera with you at all times, even when you're not fox-hunting. Then when you see a fox you've got the camera there to grab a pic. Or, you have the best chance of getting a pic in any case.

It was just so unexpected and it just ran off so fast I didn't have a chance to take a pic.The Blue Fox wrote:...

Re: I Just Can't Even...
I wish I saw a fox before, the only animals I get around here are squirrels, deer that come in our yard to eat the pears (I have probably seen at least 25 deer in 2015), and sometimes a turkey or two. I would love to see a fox.

This morning, my mother saw a rabbit run across our neighbors yard from across the street. We NEVER get rabbits around here.
Well we might, but our cats probably eat them. >_<

We get tons of deer and bunnies. The deer can be dangerous on the roads though!

Re: I Just Can't Even...
Through a memory I can't quite completely explain, I woke up and was halfway through a tee pee, when for a fleeting second I saw a pair of foxes being scared away by my camp counsellor who was banging pans.
I mostly see tiny birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and Canada geese around my parts. I've seen deer, crayfish and fish on trips though.

Between the past two nights, I must have seen about 30 deer in the fields as I was driving home. It's scary when you see them because you don't know where they're going to run, away from the road, or across it.Sleet wrote:The deer can be dangerous on the roads though!

That is true. Deer kill more humans than any other animal in North America by causing car accidents.

In the mid-1990s, deer would stampede through my town. Then the state started issuing off-season hunting licenses. Now they send state troopers to cull the deer a couple times a year, but they're still everywhere.

@Dissension
Yeah, around here there's at least one deer crossing sign on every road with 3 lanes or less and 2 miles or more.

Re: I Just Can't Even...
We have kangaroos instead of deer here. Kangaroos can also do a lot of damage to your car if you hit them. Some states also have kangaroo culls but it doesn't really make much of a difference to numbers either.Dissension wrote:In the mid-1990s, deer would stampede through my town. Speaking of deer, I just saw three deer run across the street while I was on my way home from college.

I saw a fox once.
It was in Red Dead Redemption.
I shot it and felt bad :(

Was playing a game, the Long Dark. Shot a wolf with a gun, felt a little bad. But I was hungry and it was threatening my territory. I think I made a coat out of it and I had food for many nights.

I have never seen any cockroaches over here. Probably a testament to how clean the house is. I’m sure I can find one in my sister’s room somewhere though.

When it rains hard, I've seen frogs around here. There's a bluebird that lives around here, a few ravens, maybe a cardinal or two. I saw a couple of deer once in our backyard, and I've seen a couple of opossums and raccoons while driving (usually part of the road by then). Also, skunks.

Re: I Just Can't Even...
Where I used to live on campus there were agile wallabies right outside my window. At home in Tasmania I live about 1.5 miles along a gravel road in the middle of nowhere so if I drive home at night or leave early in the morning I see wallabies, rabbits, possums and if I'm very lucky a Tasmanian Devil or a quoll. Driving along there though the day we might see rabbits, wallabies or echidnas and in the summer there's the occasional snake or bluetongue lizard. There's also a whole variety of bird life all year round.
Re: I Just Can't Even...
I found that a number of foxes were living inside my school, caretakers neglected an area around the kitchen bins and they dug their way in there
Still, they fixed the rodent problem they had, and they are still there, so I guess they are rather appreciated.
Foxes are all over the place where I live, foxes, deer, the occasional stray dog or cat... A quick five minute walk and I can see all the local fauna. Maybe we should all try and get some good pictures and post them?

I'm starting to think I should change the name of the topic to "Real Life Animal Encounters Discussion" since everyone's talking about theirs here.

That would be a good idea.

I think the name change suits the topic a lot more better than the previous name.
