Houseplans! Share your architectural tastes!
So there's this neat website called Houseplans.com that has a lot of house designs and blueprints you can browse - either by selecting an architectural style or by entering criteria (square footage, number of bathrooms, etc) in the Search function. This thread is to share links to your top picks (whether they're houses based on a realistic price range for you, or extravagant houses you'll probably never be able to afford), and to tells us what you like about them or what you would change, and to discuss house style preferences in general. Feel free to add more designs you like as you find them.
Here's an illustrated architectural dictionary to help in descriptions.
__________
Here are some house designs that I like:
• http://www.houseplans.com/plan/1599-squ ... arage-1009
This is a house plan (with some modifications) that I'm using on a (currently dead) roleplay on the FFC forums *pokes Hlaoroo*. I like it because it's a small but functional design. The modifications I made for the RP are such:
- Added Craftsman features (to fit the Southern California location)
- Added two front-facing dormer windows (one for each bedroom on the upper floor)
- Removed the fireplace, to be replaced with an entertainment center
- Added a front porch (kept the gable above the door as part of the porch roof)
- Added a carport on the left side of the house
- Removed the bay window from the master bedroom
• http://www.houseplans.com/plan/2630-squ ... tage-39213
If I were ever going to retire in Florida, this would be the house I would build. I like everything about it, especially the cupola and the lanai.
• http://www.houseplans.com/plan/2483-squ ... tage-38708
I like this plan mainly for its neat setup - the rooms are very well balanced. It is also a fairly open space. There are quite a few things I would change, though:
- Firstly, I would change the screened porch to a sun room, and would move it to the right, behind the family room, thus extending the patio (this would be on a flat plot of land, so it wouldn't be a deck).
- Secondly, I would extend the front wall on the bottom floor forward in order to get rid of the slight overhang of the upper floor (thus making the facade of the house flat) and then add a covered porch that extends across the front of the house.
- Third, I would replace the two smaller garage doors with one large one.
Fourth, I would reverse the direction of the stairs so that they rise from the left, starting on the kitchen side and ending near the door of the master bedroom (this would make it easier to get to the garage if the breadwinner was in a hurry to get to work).
- Fifth, I would extend the gable of the main roofline to to get rid of the mini roofs on either side.
I would also change some of the colors and the materials of the outside (hardy board instead of shingles).

Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

Over spring break I went on a trip to Colorado. Stayed in a cabin in the mountains and that only served to increase my love of them and their simplicity.
My dream home is a small cabin. 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a kitchen connected to the living room with an inclusive dining room. Small and simple.

Yeah, cabins are nice. I've never lived in one, but I like the style - cozy, simple, and functional. Log cabins are especially awesome.

Don't you have to pay in order to make changes for the designs?

Yeah - but not if you only visualize the changes in your mind or on your own paper.

Re: Houseplans! Share your architectural tastes!
I'm actually in an interior design class at my school. I might try my hand at drawing up a simple floorplan for the kind I wanted. Though Douglas kind of hit it on the head with the ones he linked to me.

^ I think I liked that one the best.
Though this one that Douglas linked me is a really close second V

I prefer a lone simple life. Enough space for me and maybe a pullout couch if someone wants to visit. Maybe.

Or you could make them sleep on the floor.
Re: Houseplans! Share your architectural tastes!
So I think I have something to add to this thread, but not what you guys might be talking about.
I found this artist named Imperial Boy while I was looking for wallpapers, and to me it's a combination of something that is vast and close/snuggly at the same time. For example:
I guess these kinds of a pictures give me great joy to look to, so I guess I can say it conforms to my architectural tastes.

Yikes, I hope whoever lives there doesn't get too dizzy often.
