A Jury Summons! Wow!

Post by The Blue Fox »

Literally, like, 10 minutes ago I found a letter for me sitting in our envelope slot...when I opened it...it's a jury summons! They want me to appear as a member of a jury in a court of law! owo Holy Moley!

Huh. Well, it might be something interesting and different to do. Why not? :P

Any of you guys ever been summoned to do Jury duty? What was it like?

I myself haven't been to jury service. However I know a few bits about the process before the court case.

You'll first be chosen for a case randomly out of a group of other people. Then you'll have to go through a vetting process by both the prosecution and the defence's lawyer. if you don't get vetted against then you'll most likely be sitting on the jury bench.

Also, the whole thing is meant to be anonymous so don't go telling anyone anything about the where, when, who, etc... That could seriously mess with a trial.

The first time I got selected to go up for voir dire (the process where the prosecution and defense determine the jury; at least, that's what it's called in the US, I think its meaning in the UK is different), the bailiff called the wrong case name, and they instantly called a mistrial. I was sent home.

The second time I got selected to go up for voir dire, I was selected for the jury. It was for a DUI case. The arresting officer never showed, and the case was dismissed. I was sent home.

There are three other times where I wasn't picked to go up for any cases.

I would wear something somewhat nice. Business casual (slacks and polo shirt) will work. A tie is probably too much.

Yep. I'm aware I'm legally obligated not to utter a word of what happens within those walls.

First rule of Fight Club and all that.

Oh, point of note, you are most likely to end up in a Crown Court, I think there are some cases in a civil court where a jury is called upon, but not many.

For those that are not aware the Crown Court deals with more serious crimes, such as Grievous Bodily Harm and Treason (extremely unlikely this day and age). Although sometimes the defendant may opt to have their case heard in a Crown Court rather then a Magistrate's Court.

I forget what the limits are of how much you can tell us of the goings on. I don't know how UK laws differ from US laws, but I'd imagine that at least they aren't word for word the same.

Mmmm. I'll have to look into what the rules state I can share with the outside world.

But I imagine I can say what the defendant is being accused of but I'm not allowed to disclose an actual name or say anything about evidence or testimony or anything. Just what the defendant is being accused of. That's it.

If it was me, I wouldn't say anything about the case just because I don't wanna get in trouble.
