PDF Readers

Post by Hlaoroo »

So, all of us need to read PDFs at some point. To date I've just used the default one that Microsoft put on my computer, Microsoft Reader. It's an app rather than a program and I always found it slow and clunky and awkward.

In the past I've used Adobe because that was installed by default too. As I recall though, that can also be slow.

I've just found one called Foxit which seems like a reasonable alternative although I don't know anything about it yet. Also its name sounds furry.

So what PDF readers do you guys use and what do you think of them?

Sumatra PDF - I carry this in my Pendrive because is portable and takes little space. Supports windows XP.

WPS+PDF - Linux and Android, I don't think there's a Windows version. Nice office suite that includes a reader, I use it in my phone. Is on Google Play Store.

Google Drive PDF - Android, nice PDF reader also, I use it alternatively along with WPS+PDF.

PDF complete - It came preinstalled in my PC. There's not much to say about it.

Adobe Acrobat

Perfect Viewer - Android. Was made for reading comics in tablet. Also supports epub. Is on Google Play Store.

PDF.js - Firefox addon to read PDFs.
Have you been looking at the thing above this? Dis is my old signature and is not relevant anymore.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is what I use.
It is slow? I dunno... Never heard of any other PDF-readers... Never thought of any others...

I have used PDFlite in the past, as it allows me to use the copy feature. It has document conversion features as well, which comes in handy when you need to use quotes for an essay and can't be bothered to type a huge quote!

(Seriously, I needed 12 paragraph-sized quotes for an analysis of The Scarlet Letter. Guess who found the laziest way possible? XP )

OpenOffice does most of the things I need it to, but I have yet to try PDF's on it.

Recently I had to split a PDF document and found out that Adobe Reader won't let you use the split function unless you buy the Pro edition.

PDF24 Creator was my answer! We have it on all the machines at my school and it was a lifesaver for me (and it's free). It does not let you copy text though, so I still recommend PDFlite for that feature.

(The document I needed to split was a very finicky Word template (exported to PDF) and I exhausted all possible options in both Word and Adobe Reader before having to find new software.)

Used to use the Reader metro app but since MS killed it I just use Edge now.

Well anyways, if you ever REALLY need to open a document that has like odt or is pdf based, your browser should be able to do it because it's usually just extended markup language. Not that it'll read all of it.

Most of my pdfs just get opened in Google Chrome.
