Before! Like, not a way, way long time before... but at least a few years.

The sad thing is that stereotypes became stereotypes because of some fact or truth. There is no major stereotype in the world that is not true in some way. But yeah, using them as examples can be hurtful, but many people do without knowing it. I know i have lolDubiousity wrote:Stereotypes are mostly negative and should not be used as an example, ever.

Well, I know they're based on things that can be seen as factual, but honestly, how many "good" stereotypes are there?Typhon wrote:The sad thing is that stereotypes became stereotypes because of some fact or truth. Right, even the positive ones, because they imply that the person in question is less of an individual.

I was into furry stuff before, it was HP! that allowed me to understand what it was and that it's called being a furry.

Mario? That universe doesn't exactly lend itself too well to furries. How'd that work?
Granted, there are a few animalesque races. Though most aren't mammals (not to say all furries have to be mammals.)

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
I didn't consider myself a furry until after HP!, but I have furry roots stretching all the way back to preschool, when I repeatedly cut out and wore paper ears and tail to mimic the talking donkeys from Pinocchio that I was fascinated by (my first fursuit! ^w^ ).
Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

The RPs that I was in generally had species like Koopas, Goombas, Crazee Dayzees, Amazee Dayzees, Lakitus, Yoshis and the like.
I only had Yoshi and Koopa OCs. Strange I didn't think to use the one species that I NAMED myself after.

I think I have gotten pretty immersed in the fandom. Its to the point that I almost don't like stories unless they are about non-human characters.

Before, actually through a different comic. Concession (Mature content warning ) opened me up to furrydom, and Ballerina Mafia made it definite.

Holy necro batman!
Well I do have something to contribute, so I'll go ahead as well.
Well before I found HP, I was pretty into Digimon and Pokemon, interneting later on took care of the rest.

Blame the self-proclaimed forum necromancer then. That should be his title.
Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
Yeah I knew about the fandom before I knew about Housepets! The thing was... I liked furry art but I was kinda afraid of the community itself and stereotypes, but I moved past that after a conversation in the "Do You Consider Yourself A Furry" part of the forum. Actually I still haven't voted there.
Edit: I decided to vote no. I am very Furry-like, but I have decided not to connect myself with the fandom. Not officially, at least

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
To be honest, I was completely clueless about the fandom until I found Housepets (A few years back). When I figured out that there was a huge community of people who had the same interests, I realized that I wasn't crazy. Now, I'm as furry as ever

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
I became a furry in July of 2014, and I found out about Housepets in August 2014. Not long after, but not after Housepets. It was after I started to read Twokinds and Savestate though.

Necrothread
In any event - a little word on stereotypes:
Most people outside of the internet don't know about furries. So you might be the first person they ever meet or hear from that identifies as such.
If you are all secretive about it, all they have to do is "google what is a furry?", and the stereotype becomes reality.
If you aren't all that secretive, then YOU get to set the preconception of what a furry is. You get the chance to make the first impression. You get the opportunity to .... make a good impression.
Generally, it makes life easier, *I* think.
It seems to work for me, but then again, I'm a greymuzzle with a job and kids and such, so maybe they just let me get away with more stuff.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
Heh, I looked up Housepets and the person (my friend) looked over and called me a derogatory furry term, that is what got me looking up what a furry is. So I guess when he noticed that is when I knew I was a furry.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
I had heard a little about the fandom and was a obsessively researching it to find out its roots and workings and then I found housepets and after reading half of it I started to look up the genres webcomics where I found Ravenwolf (great comic) and then I joined the housepets forums and accepted that I was a furry. Then I finished the comic of course.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
Well, I guess you could say techincally I've been a furry as far back as I can remember, I always liked the concept of humanoid animals. I however don't think you discover you're a furry, but decide to be for different, possibly subconscious reasons. Like, sure I've liked furry stuff for a long time, but it was still my decision to be fascinated by them, you know? Anyway, I first learned the term last year on TVTropes, and then discovered the community later that year, and just earlier this year I decided to join the fandom myself.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
I was a furry long before I discovered HP!, but the HP! community has made me feel better about that part of myself.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
Technically I did not consider myself furry until some time after I first begun following HP!
However I was considering for quite a while, most of the webcomics of the past I used to read or keep up with had a similar crowd in my respects. Although I had considered the possibility as early as around 2000-2002 when I become a regular on a therian forum.

Re: Before or After Question For Furries?
I think I was a furry ever since I was little but didn't know that I wasn't alone until a couple of months ago, and I was facing bad depression, so when I found out that I was one, it made me feel more happy about myself. And it was after I found HP.
