British Curriculum 6th Form

Post by Agent Sandwich »

Today I unofficially became a Lower 6th Form. I will officially become a 6th form when my IGCSE/GCSE grades arrive in Beijing to signify 5 Cs or above. Please feel free to comment if you are in a British school and about to or have recently become a 6th Form (upper or lower).

I'm at Harrow Intl School Beijing. What makes our school awkward (sic from our headmaster) is the fact that the school expects students to enter 6th Form after Y11.

Nice one - hope you get some good results! I've yet to take those pesky GSCE's as of yet, but hey, may as well enjoy this time while it lasts right?

(Or not. GSCE years suck...)

I have absolutely no idea what this means at all.

Darn my US school system, and not knowing other school systems at all.

Don't worry, we can go take our ACTs and SATs over there with all the cool kids.

So what exactly does all that mean? I'm curious.

After consulting Wikipedia I think that he has just finished the British equivalent of junior high school.

Note: This information is supplied without liability, since I find the US system quite confusing.

The US system isn't that confusing. We just have twelve grades that take place in three different schools.

I suppose the junior high/middle school thing is a bit confusing since it's not automatically discernible that they're the same thing.

Er?

Kindergarten through Fourth Grade: Elementary School

Fifth Grade: Upper Elementary School

Sixth and Seventh Grades: Middle School

Eighth and Ninth Grades: Junior High School

Tenth through Twelfth Grades: High School

Of course, Russellville School District is the only one I've run into that's structured in such a way.

Wow, you guys do it confusingly. So if there's that much variation, then I guess we are complicated. Everywhere I've ever heard of does it as follows:

Kindergarten through 5th or 6th grade: elementary school
6th or 7th grade through 8th grade: middle school or junior high
9th grade through 12th grade: high school

Leaving two variables: whether or not 6th grade is included in elementary school and whether the term "middle school" or "junior high" is used.

My district called it middle school and put 6th grade in it.

Here it's run like this:

K-2: Elementary
3-5: Upper Elementary
6-8: Middle
9-12: High School

Our high school sucks in regards to both academics and athletics. Pennsylvania always seems to get a "Middle place" award for everything. Meanwhile, Minnesota (where most of my family lives and where I want to live) has the highest ACT scores in the nation for its 6th year in a row. Second highest in life expectancy as well.

It doesn't get a "middle place" for the furry convention award.

Why don't you live there? When you say "family" do you mean extended family?

. . . besides, there is no difference between public and private here beyond how much you pay and how haughty you look; i would have said "high school"

I think the systems change either when we go into either 5th Grade or 7th Grade. But it's the middle schools that really complicate matters...

Simplest system:

5-9-years-old: farm opium
10+-years-old: shoot at the government, foreigners and/or other ethnic groups

I'm a killjoy, I know.

Yeah, that's how we do it where I live... I wish I were lying :c Stupid South Carolina. Charleston Rocks, and so does the little bit of Appalachia that we have, but the majority of out state follows the aforementioned educational system.

I'm pretty sure that's against pretty much every federal law of every first-world country.

Enjoy it while you can, becuase once you move schools you get...

- Tons of homework
- Harder work in general
- Divided into cliques (in some, not all, cases)
- Treated less as an individual
- Less free time

Ah, the joys of high school...

At least the situation is improving, at some point there will have been no option to go to a school. I know I complain about school a ton but when I get right down to it, I do honestly feel privileged to have such an awesome school :D

In case anyone is interested, they are planning to or might have already carried out a change in the British School system. Basicly if you aren't accepted at a college after your GCSE's (year 11 in High School), then you stay on at your High School for another two years.
