That makes me extremely curious! How could we get rid of those? Especially U, we have way less written vowels than we have spoken vowels as it is.CaptainPea wrote:I'm fully aware that c covers no unique phoneme. One could also, by that logic, dispense of G,U,W,Q, and probably some other letters too. It would cause one or two problems with spelling, though, and I think some people might be a smidge resistant.

Scratch U, I was thinking of just a long o sound.
But a W word like "word" could be respelled as ooerd. It looks silly and the pronunciation is unclear, but it still sort of makes sense.
And Q is just w with a k at the front of it. So quiz becomes kooiz.
I think everyone would love it, it's so easy.

Actually 'w' is considered a separate phoneme from 'oo'
It is a glide, not a vowel

and I've always agreed that c is pretty much useless, but then how would we spell chat?

I'm glad not only i know that. c:RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:and Mercury has the shortest orbital period, so it was named after the fastest god.
H is a useless letter; It's the sound of you breathing, which is something you have to do to talk. We would get rid of the H, and then H would make the "CH" sound.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:and I've always agreed that c is pretty much useless, but then how would we spell chat?

Aha! Then I can challenge that, because there are indeed fundamental differences in pronunciation!CaptainPea wrote:Scratch U, I was thinking of just a long o sound.

'w' is a voiced labiovelar approximant - extending what that means, 'voiced' means that the vocal cords are vibrating during production of the sound. Being labiovelar, or lablialised velar, it is formed with the back of the tongue pulled up towards the soft tissue at the back of the mouth while the lips are pulled together. Being an 'approximant' means that the airflow is narrowed through the place of articulation, but not impeded enough to form a turbulent stream of air (that is to say, very basically, the gap is not as small as it is for making the sound 's' or 'f').
further alienating the replacement form from the original, the english language has a lot of instances of the very interesting phenomenon of the:
glottal stop
take any word that begins with a vowel. in fact, let's take 'any'. though we do not write it, there is in fact a consonant before the a (in terms of how we usually pronounce the word). think about it. there is usually a stop, a point where there is no air flowing in or out of your throat, just before a puff of breath and the vowel starts. that is a consonant.
to use your example of 'word', as it stands, the approximant leads into the vowel. with 'ooerd' (lookin' a bit like dutch there mate), however, it starts out with an entirely different consonant and warps into a crazy triphthong!
i agree with q being 'a k with a w' because well... it is. q is a labialised k, and generally in english you can imitate lablialisation of a consonant by imagining a w after it. Of course, 'kooiz' would remove that labialisation which would change the sound from being the rounded 'q' to a harsh 'k'. those are (hopefully obviously) not technical terms, i just think 'k' sounds kinda harsh most of the time...
i'm still totally confused about G, though!
this post took so long because i am lazy and kept doing other things

Comments about past subjects:
1.) I practice language jazz. Know the rules but don't be afraid to break them. But don't break them for the point of breaking them, or you'll sound like an idiot.
2.) I support "Sol" and "Luna" for the sun and moon. Or perhaps "Celestia" for the sun.
3.) Mercury.

When people use just one, it makes other people assume I'm that gender if they don't know me well enough. It's a lot easier to shake the assumption that I'm a vixen than that I'm a tod on the internet.Ebly wrote:She is, but I find it funny how he reacts worse when you imply he's male than if you imply she's female.Psykeout wrote:She's way to touchy about that, isn't she?

Also, the only useless letters in English are X, Q and C. Others can be removed, but they would require a lot more rearrangement. C would just have to be replaced with K or S (and "ch" would be reassigned to "kh" or something), Q would have to be KW or K, and X would have to be KS or Z.

I think C is still quite important, especially in the case of CH.
I mean, I can't imagine writing and pronouncing 'kheat', 'khat' or even 'kheese'. XD

I think C is nesessary for purely aesthetik reasons. S is already the most kommon konsonant, imagine how overrun our language would be with s's if we altered all the spellings.
