Forum needs moar questions

Post by Toboe »

Rick, get cracka-lackin!

1. (I know I'm over thinking this) How did domestication happen in Housepets? I know the theory in RL is that wolves started following ppl around, eating their scraps, and the cave-mens decided to keep feeding them and take them hunting and call them "puppy." But sometimes when ppl have wanted to try to domesticate a new species, they've just kinda "kidnapped" them.

2. Do they have animal-run casinos on wildlife refuges?

3. Did you have any pets growing up? Are any of the Housepets characters based on those?

4. You are the master of genious-osity.

5. You said you are turning your comic "In the New Age" into a book instead, because it's a drama, and decided to do something lighter with housepets. I've been thinking about doing a drama comic, so I'm wondering what it is about the drama genre that made you decide a book would be better.

6. What would you say is your dream job?

1. What's wrong with having it happen in similar ways?

2. Hahaha no. Animals who are not pets don't have any legal standing, they're not just 'tax exempt'.

3. I had a handful of pets. Timothy (dog, given away to a farm), Tiger (yes, a dog, given to a family friend), Kermit (the dog! Parents sent him to the pound), Roll (cat, killed by a car), Nina (cat, given away to an Amish/Mennonite family, don't know if she liked that too much), and Kotenyak (ran away). I can't really say I've based any of my characters off my pets, considering we only had them for short periods of time, and in the case of the cats, they pretty much stayed outside which is kinda dumb. I am planning on getting a dog soon though, and it will be my dog, and he will be awesome I am sure.

4. That's not a question, professor! (Yeah I know same joke)

5. The problem with a drama webcomic is that there's huge pauses interspersed among the action. In order for a drama to work properly as a serial, each update needs to be complete, or at least have something new happen every page.

Of the drama comics that I read:

Tales of the Questor updates sporadically. Every single page has you wondering what's going to follow, and if it's in the lull between tense arcs, there's humor. Sometimes there's humor inside the arcs.

Order of the Stick is just as much a comedy as it is a drama.

Erfworld and Breakfast of the Gods revel in their absurdity long enough to catch your attention before hitting you with the drama.

Skin Horse is a dramedy like her previous comic Narbonic.

And Jack is pretty much gorn.

The main issue is that I didn't push INA like any of those; the story itself is straight drama, and the whole story blends together in such a fashion that it would work better as a novel. I am sure I could try it again as a serial, but I have other plans for it now. However, I have another story, Empries, which I am currently planning on doing as a biweekly serial, but not as a comic. I plan on it being comedic and dramatic like most of the successful online serials.

6. Creative head of a successful multimedia studio with a nigh-unlimited budget.

hey, Jack is epic when he can update properly :D

I also like Better Days for drama. Well I -liked- rather. Shame the series ended, but I'm glad he started up Original Life in its place. Its not drama, but its good ^^

1. What's wrong with having it happen in similar ways?
In HPC's reality, it must actually have been a strategic accomodation, something a tad more complex than how it happened in our world, where non-human animals have been considered only living tools or food sources. We must have seen diplomacy at work in many ways, must have been very interesting, that first stage of the long-lasting alliance.
Unless of course animals gained humanlike qualities far later in time...

And no, I absolutely don't want to irritate you, Rick: such considerations come from an obvious conclusion. In our worl, man gained supremacy thanks to the ONLY physical qualities that made him unique in the race: higher intelligence and manual dexterity. That also made us capable to better adapt for other climates and regions than Africans'.
Give dexterity and intelligence to other mammals (by the PRIDELANDS series one can educately guess that animals had weapons craftmanship and possibly mastery over fire), give intelligence to birds, snakes and ungulates (horses at least) and presto! We find ourselves locked in a competition where not only we are no longer superior, but also physically weaker! I mean, one thing is organize a group to hunt down a wolf with spears and counting on it not being able to do much than run away or counting on teeth and claws to fight back, the other is to fight against a pack of critters that have better teeth, better claws AND a plan to get back at us!
Same for our 'preys': in those wild times, I can't imagine herds of intelligent deers just letting themselves slaughtered for our good. A pack of intelligent wolves had MUCH more chances to get at 'em rather than a group of us.

My first guess on how domestication happened in HPC's world is that something very, very bad happened to the other competitors in a given region -pandemic if I can hazard- and human tribes decided to help the survivors into a fruitful alliance. Such alliance, providing the best for both species, must have spread quickly throughout the millennia, setting for peace between our species and others, leading to the current 'domestication'.

My guess is luck. Because evolution is more or less random in some aspects, Humans probably managed to gain higher sentience first, OR their intelligence simply evolved faster than other animals. So humans remain more advanced than animals, develop their tech faster, and thus domestication continues as per normal. Heck, maybe the reason the animals are sentient at all are because of humans; maybe as part of domestication, animals learned speech and other such stuff, and taught other animals. So yeah, Rick's answer is fine.

Out of curiosity, was Pridelands written by a human author, or a pet or both?

Pets probably don't have publishing rights, although that poses an interesting question.

I daresay that artirst pets' owners get to manage the legal interface, just like parents to kid actors for example. In case of owner's death, there could be different solutions. Owner's next of kin is transferred the contract and becomes new manager, or the editor/production becomes manager itself.
But I think there is no doubt that the pet is fully credited if he/she's the writer/actor, etc., just like any other artist.

But is there a story?

EDIT: Actually, don't tell me. I don't even when, how or why I started reading Jack; heck, reading Housepets without my parents looking at me funny is hard enough.
