I'd say it could definitely be argued you're a furry, but you're definitely the first two.

Things between being furry and parents.

Le me drawing fursona of someone for secret doodle santa.
Mom comes into my room, I flip my drawing.
Mom asks, 'what are you doing?'
Me: drawing.
Mom: why are you hiding your drawing then?
Me: just don't want to show it to you
Mom:why?
Me:I just don't want to..
Mom: are you drawing naked girl?
Me: no, why are you thinking like that? I know I'm growing teenage boy but...

Mehhh, I wonder what my mom would think If she sees my furry drawings.

There is only one way to find out.

And maybe you should show her before she starts really wondering why you won't. It could get kind of strange if she thinks you really are drawing that kind of stuff.

Tell her, if you don't stop than the voices promise to hurt you. And they will get angry, you don't like it when they get angry, they stick you in a small, dark box. If she asks who told you to say this, tell her it was the Grey Wolverine, then the white coats come one :P .

In seriousness, say I'm doodling things, I dunno really.

I'd say if you really don't want to show her just reassure her that you're not doing anything downright wrong, just something she might find odd and so you feel awkward showing her. I'm not sure how you'd say that to her but honestly, unless she's a worrier or you're a problem child, she should understand it's probably awkward for you and may even be trivial for her so she should just respect your privacy and trust your judgement.

My two cents on parenting. ;)

Whaoo, thanks for suggestions,
I'm thinking That she said it jokingly so she must have forgot it by now. But if this happens again I'll prove that I'm not doing something odd by showing ma drawing, then die of embarassment. Cuz of my bad art skillz.

I drew this "self-portrait" in the year 1984 while at the local community college. The word "fursona" hadn't been invented yet. It was called a screen name. uhm, and I guess I'm over 40 now.... though I don't feel like it.

Some other words of advice from a "parent": If you flip the sketch book closed when the parent walks in, the parent radar flashes "warning" in the back of the parent's head. If you are ashamed of what you are drawing and don't want to share, then most parents will justifiably feel nervous & suspicious of the activity. Don't say that it should be any different or that it's wrong, because it doesn't change the reality that in real life, "The perception of the one in charge BECOMES the realty!". I learned that the hard way while in the USAF and ended up with a full-bird Colonel who wasn't on my side of the equation. Luckily it only cost me a chance at a second overseas tour. I learned that lesson and life has gone much more smoothly ever since.

My suggestion is that you INCLUDE your parents in your drawings. Make plenty of anthro drawings that are fun and family friendly, and show them to your folks. Do little sketches & give them away to them. Be open. Help them see your art as fun, innocent, friendly and aspiring. Get them on your side of the equation.

Considering Uncle Kage, the chairman of Anthrocon and the de facto leader of the furries, is over 40, I think over-40s definitely know about the fandom at least somewhat!

The webcomic's always been arguably furry (I believe there used to be a thread asking if Housepets was furry. After all, I think we can all agree it's more like Garfield then 2Kinds for example). :P

Although, I know I became more open about being furry later on. I guess it could be that more people are like me in that respect.

Ever since there's been a poll it was about 75% furry. Before that, I dunno! Maybe the very existence of a furry thread made it seem furrier.

Yeah, it might just be that without a furry thread, it seemed less furry because there were a lot of people that you didn't really know for sure whether they were furry or not; and now that it's out in the open, you realize there are more people who consider themselves furry than you thought. :3

If you check out the original introduction thread, you'll notice the vast majority of members indicate they're furs. I believe that, if anything, the forums have gotten somewhat less furry over the years, as the comic's appeal grew outside its original audience. Keep in mind that most of the original readers were Rick's fans from deviantArt and Fur Affinity.

I compare this comic moreso than Garfield, Marmaduke, and sometimes Sherman's Lagoon than any of the other webcomics you see out there. The image is alot more friendly than those, but even Housepets sets the bar higher than the newspaper comics at times i find, but who doesn't is what i say. Even Sherman's Lagoon sometimes steps into those areas, but it's usually gone unharmed.

When you compare it to Marmaduke, hopefully the complete lack of humor is not what you're comparing!

Well, it's humor wasn't completely lacking. i just liked to read it for most of it's silent characterization of Marmaduke. If there was a comic though that has really any lack of human characterization, it was Marmaduke though. X3

There's no need for that option; you either do or do not consider yourself a furry. For our purposes, the definition of a "furry" is one who enjoys various media featuring anthropomorphic animals, whose enjoyment of said media is increased by the presence of the anthropomorphic characters.

There are a wide variety of things people assume it means to be "furry." The definition used for this thread (and which I consider most accurate) is the one I stated.

so in other words my answer would be a definite yes.
im just glad people arent too demanding here about to what extent you have to be active as one to be one.
unlike some other places ive posted to.
is refreshing to have nice people that dont care either way

Thanks

My experience with furries on the internet is that communities tend to be pretty awful. We're not going to say "You need a fursuit to be a furry!" or anything dumb like that. If you like anthropomorphs, you're a furry, basically.

Re: Are You A Furry?

It's hard to judge these days. What makes me unhappy is the term is more of a negative term than a positive. Generaly speaking, i consider myself furry, but until the title has been brought into a more positive light, i would start to think of myself as a less than obvious furry and more of a person that just loves cats a very lot. Anthro or not, any form of cat is cute, i just prefer the ones that speak their mind =P

Reason being is because I'm heavily a cat lover. I love cats and felines, but foxes get special mention because i been seeing alot more foxes lately and i even went so far as to attempt to draw some and was decent at it, just didn't have the time. I tend to agree though that i like any furry animal because i believe they are more emotional than us humans and that's what i tend to enjoy them. I don't find i'm weird with them in a fictional romantic setting considering that i grew up with the cute idea that breeding furry animals was the luckiest thing about furry romance. They get the outright genetic look better than humans from fur color to habits. Heck, it's one of the main reasons puppies and kittens are so darn cute i always believed.

I completely agree with GameCobra, but you know what? Screw it, on this forum I'm considering myself a furry!

From now on, if someone asks if I'm a furry, I'll tell them what I like and let them decide. But by Diss' definition and because of how awesome this particular furry community is, I am now one of you!

Is it possible for me to change my vote or something?
