Bino's name? ',:-/
Bino's name? ',:-/
Me and a friend have been trying to settle a dispute about the character Bino. We have been arguing over how his name is pronounced. I say it's pronounced "BEE-no", and he swears to high heaven that it's pronounced "BY-no"! (Like in the word "albino")
If anyone would please shed a little light on the subject, I'd really like to end this dispute between us. I think it would be best to get an answer from Rick Griffin himself, so if someone could give me a way of contacting him, like an email or something, that would be ten times better.
Thnx

Re: Bino's name? ',:-/
I pronouce it like your friend says with the letter "i" being high. So it would sound like "Bye-no"

Re: Bino's name? ',:-/
I think Rick said in a podcast a while back that he calls his character "Bye-no" (like albino), but he also did acknowledge that many people in the fandom call him "Bee-no" too.
Perhaps one could pronounce his name Bih-no or Bei-no? it's really just a preference like y'know potayto/ potahto.

I always call Bino as you do Donbefox, the same way I pronounce "wine" in spanish, that is "vino" (well, only with the B instead the V). Call him "Bye-no" sounds stupid to me.
The same I do with Fido, I call him "fEEdo", because that's the way it is pronounced in Latin, a word that means "loyal" and is derived from the word "fidelis". Call him f-I-do sounds gross.

the thing is, Fido, pronounced Fye-do, is a common dog's name, at least in America. and since Rick's American, I'm fairly certain that's how it's meant to be pronounced. though you're probably right about the name's origin considering dogs' reputation for loyalty.
and since he's Bino's brother, I've always pronounced it with the same vowel sounds, so to me he's Bye-no. and since Rick says that's how he pronounces it, I feel it's right.
then again, the creators of the .gif file format say it's pronounced jiff and I ignore that, so to each his own. to-may-to, to-mah-to and all that.

Re: Bino's name? ',:-/
Here is a common name too, and we pronounce Fido that way. You know, over here even are people with that name, I remember had meet at least two or three persons called Fido. I think there's a singer of Reggae with that name if I remember correctly. And even the famous character of Seven Up is called "Fido Dido" (well, at least in my country, I don't know how is it in others places).RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:the thing is, Fido, pronounced Fye-do, is a common dog's name, at least in America. and since Rick's American, I'm fairly certain that's how it's meant to be pronounced. though you're probably right about the name's origin considering dogs' reputation for loyalty.

So the point is that I respect all of you but simply I don't care how you pronounce a name (specially one that I know pretty well) I still continue to call them the same way I been doing it so far (even if the autor itself comes to shout it to my ears how I should pronounce it )

In Italian, Bino is the word for "Gemello" (twin), so I'll pronounce it Bee-no and fantasize that he's Fido's twin from the same litter.

That one's kinda tough, it's pronounced "Karishad." *giggles*
I don't know that he's ever given me direction, I typically just call him Kari (which rhymes with Carrie). It's based on the word for "fox" in a Native American language (the specific one eludes me, at the moment).

I don't find Karishad hard to pronounce, It's just like say "car"-"e"-"shad" (this last syllable pronounced the same way as "shadow")

I pronounce it Car (like the vehicle)-e (like the letter)- shod (rhyming with tod, as in a male fox. or if you don't know how to pronounce that, it also rhymes with rod.)
and cause I know some people disagree on how to pronounce Tarot, it rhymes with Sparrow cause that's how the fortune telling cards are pronounced.
now a couple pronunciations I'm not so sure on.
Lana. Is it law-na or lay-na? I usually go with the first, but I just realized the second is a viable choice.
Lucretia. I say loo-cree-sha, but doesw anyone pronounce it differently?

I go with Fye-do and Bye-no, cause I'm American and that's how we do things here.
I say Loo-cray-sha because it's Latin (though I suppose that should technically make it Loo-cray-tya, but I'm American)
And I agree with Car-ee-shod and Law-na

I heard Rick pronounce it with the first syllable being "care," not "car."

In Portuguese Bino is also a name/nickname and it's pronounced "Bee-no". But I have no idea how it is in English.

I'm curious, why would anyone pronounce is Bee-No. There are plenty of words that are similar to his name
Dino. Wino. Albino. Heino. Rhino. Sino....huh...is that all of them?
Spike - "Seriously, a talking Dog is the weird thing about all this"
Me - "Not at all, the fact that you're a dog and not a lizard is much weirder"

well let's see. there's dino (the pet on the Flintstones) pronounced Dee-no, and British people pronounce Albino as Al-bee-no, I believe.

well my pronunciation of Lana is the same as Lana Lang, Superman's ex-girlfriend. so I still think it's Lawn-a. and Lu-cay-she-a (or lu-cray-sha) sounds weird to me so I'll keep pronouncing that the same unless Rick says otherwise.
as for Karishad... That pronunciation will take some getting used to, but I accept you as a proper authority on how that one's pronounced.

It might be an Arkansas thing, but that's how every female I've known by "Lana" has pronounced it.

yeah, it's probably a regional thing. I would still like Rick to weigh in before I change how I pronounce it.

then again, so is Kansas, which is where Lana Lang is supposed to be from. Though the pronunciation may just be cause the writers aren't from that area.Sleet wrote:Well Alabama is kinda like Arkansas so that might mean they pronounce it the same.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:yeah, it's probably a regional thing. Maybe it is like the pronunciation of aunt. Where I live it is pronounced "ant", but up north (and how I say it) it is pronounced "awnt"...

For what it's worth, the commonly-accepted "correct" General American pronunciation of "aunt" is the same as "ant."
Also, more importantly, it's been brought to my attention that I was way off base with the pronunciation of Lucretia. Sorry, y'all! *tucks tails & runs*

Now I wonder, how you english people pronounce Sabrina and Tarot?
In my case is:
Sa (same as "SAck") bri (same as "BRIEf") na (same as "NAmibia")
Ta (same as "TAct") rot (similar as "ROTund" but the "R" a bit more soft and quick)

The "T" is silent at the end of Tarot. Pronounced like Tear-Row. Um, like how you tear a piece of paper up, not a tear you cry out...
