Just came back from seeing The Lego Movie, and it was great!
Re: The Silver Screen
Me too! Great animation, great humor, great action, and surprisingly great character work. Two scenes, one involving the ever-adorable Uni-Kitty, actually got me teary-eyed.
Re: The Silver Screen
I've enjoyed the end of the trilogy, too, but I'm fonder of the original. Statham's role as an anti-hero here is a more interesting, multi-faceted version of Frank than that of the other two and the female lead is more connectable. The middle one tried too much to pander to action movie tropes, probably in order to do better in the American market, but went overboard.RatHead wrote:I personally like them all, and the first one is pretty darn good, but I'd recommend the 3rd one to get the best experience/etc, and then you can go back and watch the others.(Also the 3rd IS the best )Liam wrote:For those who've seen them, which Transporter film is the best (if at all)?

Re: The Silver Screen
Yeah, again I said that I like them all, not that I enjoyed them all, and the middle one is definitly the worst, but I'ma have to disagree on what you said about the first one being better, I think the Female character comes off as too clingy, and it almost seemed to me as if they were just trying too hard, The third movie to me just seemed to be more comfortable in what it had created. This may just be my opinion, but, as I have seen all three movies multiple times, I would like to say I am a bit of a fan of them and you'd probably find a decent amount of other people that say the same things i have said; again, your opinion, and mine.
I have not seen TWOWS yet so I cannot say anything about it, if you see it and like it, please tell it here or pm me about it!

And they're right. Its a fairly easily grasped concept once you get used to it!

Re: The Silver Screen
For being a PG-rated kid's movie, The Lego Movie has some very good humor that was handled very maturely. Which is surprising given that many movie's of it's caliber can be very immature at times (Looking at you, Ice Age: The Meltdown). I also found that I couldn't bring myself to dislike any of the characters for any reason- but if I had to pick favorites I'd pick Bad Cop and Uni-Kitty.
I also saw Robocop and I'm impressed with how intelligent action movies have become- obvious deviances from reality aside (cars don't explode like that guys). I'll tell you this, the way they did the battle between man and machine tugged at my heartstrings (or should I say wires *bricked*) a bit.
I'd say both these movies are worth a watch, if not more.

Re: The Silver Screen
I'm surprised by the positive response I've seen for this movie. I feared this to be just another pointless, defanged remake that would be forgotten after three months (looking at you, Total Recall). Might watch it once it opens here.

Trust me. That film is far more coherent than the novel. For one it has something that resembles a narrative and a plot. I commend David Cronenberg for making the attempt.
My copies of Dario Argento's "Opera" and "Tenebre" just arrived in the mail! Two excellent giallos!

So I just watched the 1982 version of The Thing and holy Darwin guys. I mean just...wow. It takes a lot to make me squirm in my seat during a movie and it definitely did. It was so cool. I just want to talk about it with everyone I meet.

Just came back from a screening that showed all the animated shorts of 2013, and here are my thoughts on them.
Get a Horse! - My number one favorite short of the year.
Mr. Hublot - It's sweet.
Feral - Weird, but beautifully animated.
Possessions - This one was very interesting.
Room on the Broom - My 2nd favorite short of the year.
A la Francaise - Very funny.
The Missing Scarf - This one was really weird.
The Blue Umbrella - It's not one of Pixar's best shorts, but it's still good.

Re: The Silver Screen
I re-watched "The Crow" today. Classic. Not just and action film, but also gothic romance and supernatural revenge. It is all the more bitter sweet that Brandon Lee died during the production. A friend of mine said that this film is dated. I strongly disagree. It is a fresh as the day of its premiere.

Re: The Silver Screen
I know!!! Everything about that movie was awesome. It scared me and appealed to my inner 13 year old, by which I mean it captured my attention/ imgination the way movies did when I was younger and watching stuff like Commando or Desperado with my dad. The kind of movie going experience where you walk away wanting to just talk about it with everyone because every scene in it just blew your mind. I'm not going to say that never happens anymore but it certainly happens less now that I'm more jaded and study film academically.Radio Blue Heart wrote:And the genius of Rob Bottin's practical creature effects!Seth wrote:So I just watched the 1982 version of The Thing and holy Darwin guys. Oh and and WIlfred Brimely is awesome in it. I had no idea he had a hollywood career.
I could have lived without the kennel scene but I do understand why it had to be in there. Certainly didn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie and I'd even say it's one of the better scenes in the movie. But it just kind of gave me the feels. Guess I'm a softy :p

I got the same sort of feel from it. I appreciate how little it really looks and feels like a "superhero" film.Liam wrote:Normally I don't care about the current superhero flick glut, but this looks interesting. Reminds me on Firefly.
Also Seth, John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my fave movies of all time! A great marriage of practical effects, writing, scoring, and editing. Can't think of a thing I'd change about it.
Word of warning, though. I suggest avoiding the 2011 prequel of the same name. Characters are a lot dumber, there's less cold-inducing atmosphere, and the CG looks awful.
Re: The Silver Screen
I try not to watch remakes or prequels before the original anyway. And with how brilliant the 1982 version was I can't imagine being happy with the 2011 prequel so it's definitely on my never in a million years lsit. Thanks for the warning anyway though.Penwrite wrote:I got the same sort of feel from it. Finally saw Robocop. It was actually a great movie, but in my opinion, it doesn't have as much narm charm as the original... but it certainly got the gross bits. Ugh. @_@
The action in this movie was awesome and the plot was decent. If you want a good action movie and don't mind some of the creepy body horrors in it, Robocop is definitely good at it.

Re: The Silver Screen
Just got a copy of "Scalps" in the mail yesterday! I remember seeing that movie on an old VHS I bought from a video store that was going out of business.
I am sad because the video quality varies in places. Director Fred Olen Ray says that they cannot find the original negatives so they had to cobble the film back together from different sources because the film was censored in one way or another in every country in the world. One of the scenes had to be taken from a copy of the same kind of VHS I had. Hopefully the negative will be found.
It is a kind of hybrid of a supernatural horror film like "The Evil Dead" and a slasher film. A group of archaeology students are sent to dig a supposedly cursed Native American graveyard in the middle of the Californian desert. A malevolent spirit called Black Claw possesses one of the students who then goes on the rampage.

Also, to day I got a copy of "The Amazing Spider" really cheap and the Russian/Japanese co-produced anime "First Squad: Moment of Truth"! I can't wait to watch them when I get home!
