Rap music can be pretty cool if done right. "Lose Yourself" by Eminem was my favourite tune for quite a while during my late teenage years and it's still my favourite rap song. *nods*

I actually really like a lot of "bad" rap. Stuff like waka flocka started as guilty pleasure stuff. But its kind of turned into something more akin to the difference between liking punk and "good" rock music. For example I wouldn't say the sex pistols are even in the same neighborhood as bowie talent wise. Yet I enjoy them more.

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
I think you can find a lot of examples of "bad" forms of music suddenly becoming enjoyable, for whatever reason. Never really liked trap as a genre of EDM (808 + some high frequency melody + spamming the hihat doesn't take very much effort), but it strangely grew on me, especially when I started hearing how some pretty talented folk were twisting the genre. I think what a lot of "bad" forms of music tend to do is simplify a specific type of music, perhaps for lack of talent or for other reasons. Not to say every "bad" genre is like this, but sometimes the simplification makes for awesome listening.

Hummus is delicious.
I like it with tortilla chips or pita.

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
From what I understand, hummus is essentially smushed chickpeas or garbanzo beans with some oils added. It can taste bland at times, but it's a great filler and accompaniment for Middle Eastern cuisine like those from Syria, Turkey and the UAE. Some hummus with some chicken aqdah and mullawah bread is pretty fulfilling and awesome!

Garbanzo beans, olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, salt, and garlic. It's pretty easy to make.kurowolfe wrote:From what I understand, hummus is essentially smushed chickpeas or garbanzo beans with some oils added.
I've had some with roasted peppers and some with sun-dried tomatoes added in.

and on the subject of food. Today, I found dried kiwi at the store. Now I am wondering, what kind of other fruits can be dried. because I didn't think you could do that to a kiwi.

Oh, you can dry all kinds of fruits! We have a dehydrator at home. You can literally dry any fruit you like! You can even make purée and dry that so you have chewy fruity straps! Banana chips (dried banana) are my favourites though.

I like dried apricots my self. I also should get a dehydrator. But are they pretty pricey?

Well you can get a sunbeam one from most major electrical/appliance shops over here for about $130 so they're not hugely expensive but they're not the cheapest appliance out there either. I've no idea what price they'll be wherever you are though.

That reminds me of the one line from Phineas and Ferb. You know, the one with Doofenshmirtz fighting Perry with so many TV ads gadgets. I think it was, "... Here I am, eating hydrated fruit like a sucker my whole life!" xDD That really got me back then

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
I do believe there is a word out there either latin or otherwise that is similar to hummus. But since Hummus is from a bean and beans are from the ground. It could be where the word comes from. But yes something like that I just forgot where and what the word is.

Right kids, gather round for a crash course in etymology!
Humus (pronounced hume-ers) - comes from the 18th century Latin word 'humus' which means 'soil'.
Hummus (pronounced hmm-ers) - comes from the Arabic word حمّص which means 'chickpeas'.

Well, fail on me part laddies! I mean, the r's are silent, and I ran out of good syllables that those who speaks English primarily would be able to understand without having to use the IPA symbols. But yeah, better replace the 'ers' with 'uhs'

Can't really blame ya. The English language is pretty weird at times with how words are spelt and how they're pronounced.
I mean how the cuss is "baloney" spelt balogna?

Cause it's Italian, and pronounced something akin to "bolonya", which we Anglicize to "baloney".

Father's Day isn't a holiday on it's own here in Germany. It is inofficially celebrated on the day of Feast of the Ascension, means it was this year on May 29th.

There's a connection with the story of Adam and Eve... In Latin, "apple" is also said "pomo". Curious how "apple" is "mela" and "evil" is "male" in Italian, just invert the vocals.Hlaoroo wrote:Did you know that the word "malum" means both "evil" and "apple" in Latin?

Odd and wrong. The "gna" part is pronunced like in the Obbl's example, but it has a stronger timbre and the final vocal must be heard. The Blue Fox wrote:That's how I've always heard it pronounced, yes.kurowolfe wrote:Wait, you guys pronounced 'bologna' as 'baloney'? That's so odd.

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
Well, in America at least, it is pronounced "baloney" regardless of how you crazy Italians pronounce it. I mean, you only invented the word. Why should we follow your pronunciation?Cesco wrote:Odd and wrong. If I'm not mistaken, there is actually a difference between bologna and baloney in America. Not a big one, but technically they are two different things.
If I wasn't so lazy, I'd look it up and make sure I have my facts straight. But I am lazy, and therefor will not do such a thing and probably end up looking like an idiot if I'm wrong.

Bologna is the meat.
Baloney means nonsense.
Many people pronounce them the same, and it will probably become more so as time goes on. Eventually the two will likely be considered to be alternate spellings for the same word, as I know most of the kids in my generation (in my area at least) grew up under that notion.

When it comes to necessity, Wikipedia clarifies everything. The two words mean different things, indeed, it's only their pronounce that can also be the same.
What I knew was that our mortadella is called bologna in the US, because of the city origin. It's not really so...

Re: Chat Thread 41: Mod Maker
Huh. I've seen a handful comic strips use the "Bologna" spelling to mean nonsense given the scenarios it was used in... (such as one character telling another character something that the second character thinks sounds crazy) ...so I just assumed it was one and the same...someone just looked at the word and thought it sounded like a good word to use as a substitute for nonsense.Obbl wrote:Bologna is the meat.
