Jump the Shark
Jump the Shark
Just for laughs, let's come up with groan-inducing Housepets story ideas that, if it were a show, would be a clear indication that it had gone on a few too many seasons.
For example:
• An "evil twin" arc with an inevitable "But which one's the real pet?" scene
• A clip show where the characters all stand around in one room and remember stuff like it was yesterday.
• King and Bailey's kids grow up and move out, and their adopted pup, the new focus of the entire strip, is like Scrappy Doo. (Or maybe it just is Scrappy Doo.)
• For some inexplicable reason, one of the Celestials turns them all into adorable pups and kittens and they have to find a way to reverse it, but how can they do it when everyone's busy going "D'awwww" and not taking them seriously?

The entire comic is about King now. Also King has magical powers.

Re: Jump the Shark
the apocalypse happens but the pets manage to somehow stop it, either with time travel to prevent it or by defeating whatever demon causes it. that seems to be where a lot of things jump the shark.

One of the celestials pulls the 'time to wake up' line on Sabrina, and she wakes up in the galifrax dimension because Babylon Gardens was a dream the whole time. the rest of the comic becomes about finding a way back to the dream world.

only to have a twist ending that the alternate version is actually the nice one, the local one was the evil one all along.jonas wrote:• An "evil twin" arc with an inevitable "But which one's the real pet?" scene

which becomes such a frequent phenomenon that it feels weird not to have one per season/arc.jonas wrote:• A clip show where the characters all stand around in one room and remember stuff like it was yesterday.

Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Re: Jump the Shark
The arc ends abruptly, with the last panel being Res and Peanut drawn in the style from years ago, looking over the first three panels which are on a piece of paper infront of Peanut, and going:
"Wait... No... that idea wont work."
"Well what if we... hmmm... Yeah..."
(From off screen) "Its your own faults for writing out your two biggest plot drivers a dozen arcs ago!"
thereby implying that EVERYTHING since Res' first visit was just him and peanut messing around.

That actually sounds like a really interesting idea for a spin-off series.Buster wrote:One of the celestials pulls the 'time to wake up' line on Sabrina, and she wakes up in the galifrax dimension because Babylon Gardens was a dream the whole time. the rest of the comic becomes about finding a way back to the dream world.

Retconning everything since Grape's dream arc
I'm sure the cold hand of science will be able to overcome his magical powers
Re: Jump the Shark
And because of that, Grape becomes an avatar, Peanut becomes her student, Tarot and Sabrina take a more antagonistic role, Joel takes the role of Thomas and Cecilia Milton, Bailey never leaves the farm, The Game goes on for much longer.

Re: Jump the Shark
An arc where Rock makes a reality show and gets some of the neighbourhood pets to go on it.
An arc where alternate reality versions of the characters come to the main reality of the comic
An arc where a ghost possesses one of the pets and now they need to get the ghost out of their friend.
Fun Fact: Those are all real fanfiction ideas I've had. Oh boy
Mod Edit: Please refrain from using font colors which contrast poorly with our background.

Re: Jump the Shark
Not to sound like a jerk, but nothing good will come out of this thread.
It's only discarding potentially good ideas as "beating a dead horse", and to be honest, it's just depressing to think about Housepets coming to an end and might give Rick the impression that we think he's running out of ideas (I believe I speak for the vast majority of people when I say we DO NOT. It's been consistently funny, original and unexpected since the start, even getting progressively better with the years)

Maxwell dies in an "accident" off screen and Res becomes Grape's new boyfriend, and then there will be a mega arc about finding who killed Max.

Going by one of jonas's examples: Maxwell has an evil twin brother.

Abusing and making the characters uncharacteristically angsty and mean, lowering the quality of the art, throwing in a lot of unrelated filler art, not listening to the input of the readers when they show concern at this pattern. I had an awful dream about this last night.
Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

Karishad Booping Spree Arc: Karishad goes around, booping the noses of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in the comic, including minor ones like Joey's nerd friends, Jasper, the zoo animals, all the wolves, all the humans, both King AND Joel, Joel's nameless abused pets, all the Mr.Bigglesworths, oneshots and even the drowned puppy who Cerberus gave the cookie to, Poom and the camel. Not even Spot and the rest of the characters in Peanut's comic are safe, either!
Re: Jump the Shark
The pets begin turning into pod people until the only ones left are Bino and Jessica. Kitsune intervenes to reverse everything, including waking up The Other DARYL who dreamed the whole thing.
