Re: 2018/10/19 - Forbidden Format
Oh no my worse fears have been realized. VHS! NOOOOOO!
Anyway, I am so confused about this story. I don't know where this is going. I keep expecting some kind of Twilight Zone/Haunting Hour style story but it feels more like Rick is just making fun of obsolete technology and anyone born before and after 2001.
VHS!!!! AHHHH!
I'll be honest. I laughed way to hard and way too loudly at the last panel.

I like the little touches, like the lines in panel one indicating Peanut is waging his tail.
The cape comes with the promotion.

Love that Peanut's looking at the VHS like, "Uh... Grape?"

It's like watching a YouTube video of kids and teens reacting to 90's technology.

VHS is fine,
You haven't lived until you've tried to manually adjust the tracking on your VCR to get an old tape to play correctly.
Also Grape, you're thinking of JVC.

Grape’s going Wilde for the old school;
getting questions wrong but still looking cool;
holding things from when, as a rule,
the only cool monster name had to be Zuuul.
Her nutty Valentine is looking calm,
looking around and appreciating old world charm;
never treating any new things with alarm;
he knows that, with Grape, he’ll never come to harm.
Strange men with hairy faces and a candle
are never anything that our heroes can’t handle;
they can stay and hear his tales of fear and scandal
as he offers them a donut, a lifebouy and a spangle...

Oh come on, Rick. I'd hesitate to call standard def DVDs obsolete at all. In fact, I prefer them. You can play them on just about anything and they're cheaper than the fancy formats.

Kilo, you're not that old and you know they're called Blu-rays.
Point stands.

DVDs are also the only option if you don't have good enough internet for streaming services like netflix. I wasn't able to watch Voltron Legendary Defender at all until the season 1 DVD collection finally came out.Welsh Halfwit wrote:What? Info on the Discord is here, don't think the link invite works anymore, PM me if you're interested, rules are the same as here. Moving on...
You know, did those HD DVDs really catch on? My first and really only exposure to those was at a Goodwill, and I have not seen them anymore. They just died with the advent of Blu-Ray the same way Laserdisc died during the VHS days?

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray coexisted for a while, during the HD format war. Blu-Ray managed to win out I think mainly because of the PS3, because Sony, who owns the Blu-Ray format, included a player in the console.
Microsoft did sell an optional HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360, but it was expensive and didn't really catch on.

There was something that didn't seem quite right about Video Store Clerk's face and I think I figured it out. The fact that we can see his face. There are more human faces now then there were at the start of the comic, where every time there would be something obscuring part or the top of their head would be cut off by the top of the panel. Nowadays, there are more human faces, but it's still weird when one shows up. I could see you guys making the argument that his face is still obscured because his unibrow is covering his eyes.

DVDs - things you can actually play on laptops (grumbles about not having the means to play HD movies without a separate device).
Funny to think that there are humans who are just as naive as the pets.
Anyone remember the miniature VHS cases they had in kids meals?

It’s because they retain their naivety well into their adult lives, rather than growing up. Then again, so have recent generations of humans to some extent (including mine).Gameb18oy wrote:Honestly... I don’t get why we act like the pets in Housepets are that far behind the humans. Ahah, what a curious shop owner. He has a candle light? Does this shop have electricity? OMG, it still has VHS movies... Anyway, if the movie for Peanut and Grape is very special, it'll be worth if it's really on VHS and not on DVD, which isn't still so ancient, indeed.
