Well... remember when Steward first got the coin? His change was almost instant. Marion probably would have noticed the change if he were awake, and if he were sleeping I don't think he'd be able to hold the coin.

Thomas was also changed by the coins and he was awake but didn't notice until Sofia "pointed it out" to him. At this point it would seem we don't have enough information to conclude how he was changed so we'll just have to wait and see.

At this point it would be a huge let down if it did turn out to be the coin. Although I would be very interested to see HOW Marion was able to be changed with the coin and wake up only to realize what happened to him. At this point I'm going with new celestial character did it or the demon did it.
