The pun doesn't even work, since a relief is a carving that remains attached to a background of the material it's made from. No wonder Karishad doesn't get it.

We take too many things about this comic for granite... it's gneiss, but we probably shouldn't be because it looks like there's going to be a rocky road ahead.
You're a wonderful person! You can do this! Yes, you, person reading this!

Poor Dallas. He’s barely a tertiary character and yet he gets blamed for the temple.
Karishad actually looks menacing in the second panel. I didn’t think it was possible.
I wonder what other gems are there in that tunnel and more importantly what’s happening on the surface?

ROCK ON! Actually, that is quite a collection. Hope that's all of them. Didn't expect Karishad to hold a grudge.

Re: 2019/07/31 - I Am Not Made Of Stone
Jokes erupt from the nervous
and Kari tells he has a foe
as the pair go down the line
to wherever they’re gonna go.
Dallas has no idea of peril
and Kari has no limitations
and Marion has no way
to voice all his frustrations.
(Not without being thought mad)
The situation is somewhat sad.
He doesn’t know who to trust;
so he’ll just do what he must…
As for the rocks in the groove?
Too scared of Kari to even move.

More and more proof that Kari is actually the avatar of a certain nine tail...

Why doesn't the gargoyle want Karishad to know it can still move?

I wonder if there’s any residual magic(k) humming and thrumming about down there. The gargoyles seem pretty much permanently enchanted, probably by Pete himself, but I feel like the temple collapsing might have led to some of its power seeping out into nearby areas. Maybe it was a magic(k) leak that transformed Marion? Like a gas leak, only more fuzzy and cute than lethal and tragic.
With the right community, getting into a webcomic at the beginning of a brand new arc can feel just as enjoyable and rewarding as being there from the beginning.

Now I'm beginning to think that this part of the arc will be somewhat like Dante's Inferno (the poem, not the game), where Marion is Dante and Karishad's the guide. Also....I don't get the 'relief' joke either.

I wonder where the tunnel ends and if Kitsune is Kari’s avatar if the nine-tail will play a part in helping Marion.

"Relief" is a type of carving. One of the oldest types of carving, in fact. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReliefSeanWolf wrote:Now I'm beginning to think that this part of the arc will be somewhat like Dante's Inferno (the poem, not the game), where Marion is Dante and Karishad's the guide. Yeh, Marion is really stretching here. He'd be a natural for the Fools Guild in Ankh Morpork though.Nobody wrote:The pun doesn't even work, since a relief is a carving that remains attached to a background of the material it's made from. No wonder Karishad doesn't get it.
Virgil, if I recall correctly.SeanWolf wrote:Marion is Dante and Karishad's the guide.
Larry Niven did an updated take-off of Inferno and had Mussolini as Virgil. His Dante (an SF writer who was obviously an expy of Larry himself, he kept making references to thinly disguised versions of his own stories) didn't realize who he was and kept calling him "Benny".

The studio lighting is a nice touch. They can see the gargoyles and avoid the grue even though no one brought a flashlight. Poor Dallas, he wasn't even the one who blew down the temple.

I haven't heard before the theory that Kari is Kitsune's avatar, but I'm inclined to believe it's true. Perhaps there is a logical explanation for how he's able to do the absurd things he does?

The dialog as I imagine it that follows:
<Marion: Get it? Relief?
Karishad: No.
<several second pause>
Marion: Wait. Temple??
I have to feel for Dallas here. Of all the creatures to have a grudge against you, I think Karishad might be close to the worst, as much as I think he's the best to be on your side. I could see him like the Terminator. He can't be reasoned with. He can't be talked to.
And I don't think that Kitsune ever had an avatar, and still doesn't. He wasn't a player, he was the DM. If his presence is needed, then he's there.
I do agree, and I've said for a while, we kind of need to see him at *some* point in this story, if only to explain why he doesn't just fix everything. There is almost certainly a reason, having Marion just fixed in the end would be really anti-climactic, but I feel like we need to see why. It would be nice to take him off the suspect board, too. Turning random humans into small, furry animals isn't his style, but he's only one of a couple of known characters that even might have that power. Cerebus could (but has never shown that level) and Bahumat certainly (but makes no sense). I suppose the dino-demon, but we never saw that he had that kind of power, either.
<Marion: Get it? Relief?

One of the endearing things about him is that he's maintained a level of humor despite his world burning to the ground around him. He made a joke when he looked at the TV to see if everyone was a squirrel, another when he fell and had a box of nut-free granola land on him, he made a sarcastic comment to the raccoons in the tree house, etc. He'd certainly had his share of freak outs so far, and possibly a series of poor decision making brought on by circumstances, but he's mostly been level headed.trekkie wrote:Given all he went through, I’m actually kinda impressed that Marion told a joke, even if it made no sense.

Oh, wow! There's really so much space down there? Karishad must really hate Dallas, since that day... Good that our fox is hosting all those gargoyles from the now destroyed temple, but it's creepy how they're remaining themselves blocked, hiding they're really live. What other marvelous stuff is there?

The idea that Kari is Kitsune's avatar is one of those "The Beast that would Not Die" speculative themes that just keeps popping up. There really seems to be no basis for the conjecture except that they're both foxes and both irrepressible tricksters. Now, granted, there's significant evidence I don't know much about "avatars" but CyberDragon's points strike me as pretty self-evident.CyberDragon wrote:As it has been mentioned many times before, Karishad is a real life person inserted into the comic.
