Happy Birthday, Dayzee.

Re: Birthdays~!
Well, fudge! I know I composed a birthday wish for you, Amazz, but the microchips must have engulfed it. So, then, in hopes of making you feel less sad, an attempt at redemption - Happy Birthday to Amazee Dayzee and lots, lots more of `em !!! Remember and enjoy !!
Alright, Happy birthday to WolfNoise (107? really??), to JSuc418, to hyperfox, to dribin896, and to LucaVarlaro. Enjoy!
Today is the Birthday of Felix Salten, author of Bambi, Bambi's Children, and many other dog, deer, cat, and horse stories (very many of which became Disney films). You're not forgotten in furryland, Felix ... enjoy!

I remember loving the original Bambi novel when I was in fourth grade because of how dark it was, lol. When you're that age, you tend to love macabre and morbid things (I, for one, still do!)

I could never really get into Bambi unfortunately because they killed his mother. I thought that was just mean even if it happens in real life. I don't like stories that are THAT dark and involve parental deaht. But that is just me.

Re: Birthdays~!
I grew up among people who were deer hunters and knew that people killed deer. It bothered me because I often encountered these animals in the forests around me and, frequently, would find them coming out to graze in our yard very early in the morning. To me, they were these mystical, beautiful creatures, like messangers from God who came and went like ethereal beings. Dad was a dedicated but incompetant hunter who finally "got his deer" pretty late in life ... not with his Remington but with the Subaru. I went hunting with him several times - "father-son" thing, you know. I saw lots of deer but, as i used to say, I was a hunter, not a shooter.
I read Bambi and loved it because, despite its often grim depictions of predation and death (including human-animal relations), the prose was almost lyrical and had a thread of deep compassion that arose from Salten's interest in Kabbalah. (Salten was a non-practicing Jewish Austrian and nostalgic for the old Hapsburg Empire).
So, when I went to see the Disney movie, I was braced for the abrupt shock of his mother's death. The movie, frankly, handled it just as the book did - brutal, sharp, unsentimental, a punishing amputation of the mother-fawn bond. That said, the movie itself is beautiful, the background music and (some of) the song enchanting, and the art lavish, lush, and amazing even today. What disturbed me - greatly - was the "disneyfication" of the story, especially the replacement of most of Salten's poweful supporting characters (Karus, Nettla, Marena, Gobo, and many others) with Disney "cutie-patooties" like Thumper, Flower, and the Wise Old Owl. Important threads are cut out - Ronno, for eaxample, has a much more complex and moving relationship with Bambi than the violent walk-on that occurs unheralded at the end of the movie. I resented then - and still do - how the studio rewrote the story - and will go on to do this to other Salten works.
As you point out, Ty, emotional relation terminations are frequent motif in Disney stories. Such is life. At my age and my stage (76+), I frequently run into old friends and renew old acquaintences, but only briefly. What I come away with is a blend of pleasure (if their lives are good), sadness (if they have tragedies), and a wistful realization that this encounter is not a serious reconnection. Rather, whatever this relationship, it has largely evapoarted and cannot be renewed, either as it was when we parted company or seriously revived now because of what life has made of us. "Letting go" is a part of life ...
