swedish food:
Meatballs and smörgåsbord you already know of, but how about theese:

Surströmming, sour herring... Rotten fish that smells really bad. Supposedly edible if you can ignore the stench
Renskav, basically looks like kebab out of reindeer. Another version is viltskav with reindeer and moosemeat
Semlor, sweet bread with almond paste and whipped cream
Kaviar, pink/red caviar on a tube. Used with sandwiches, eggs or smörgåstårta
Smörgåstårta, "sandwichcake". Multilayered with all sorts of ingredients, eggs, salmon, ham, tuna, cucumber, shrimps yaddayadda

Must, a softdrink that I think was made as an alternative to beer, mostly sold and consumed during christmas and easter. Buy it if you see it at your local IKEA during that time. Outsells coca cola christmas/easter

Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than for the U.S. Treasury.

Coca-Cola was originally green.

Antarctica is the only continent without reptiles or snakes.

The world's youngest parents were 8 and 9 and lived in China in 1910.

Our sun will destroy the solar system in 4.5 billion years time, which will be roughly the same time the andromeda galaxy will crash into ours.

And about 'nothing' will happen as there is so much free space between the stars that it is very unlikely that any will collide. Only gravity will do it's job and rock the Milkyway. :D

Wait, galaxies can move and crash into each other?

They're floating in space and have mass, so why not? The collision of galaxies is actually pretty spectacular.

Necco wafers also don't spoil.

You Learn Something New Every Day

I'm sure we've all had it more than once...that moment where you can't help but say to yourself "Well! I didn't know that! You learn something new every day!"

I'd like all you crazy people to share with each other various moments when you've said that.

I had a pretty good example of one just the other day when I was watching a documentary about the world's fastest train, the french AGV.

They were talking about the train's pantograph and how it collects electricity from overhead lines.
They pointed out that the material they use for the part of the pantograph that actually touches the electrified wire is a tough material called “graphite”.
I’m already well aware of graphite’s toughness, but what surprised me is the revelation that it's actually an efficient conductor of electricity.

Fancy that...I never would have guessed graphite could conduct electricity...I would have thought it was more likely to resist an electrical current like rubber does.

"You learn something new every day" moments...go!

This might seem obvious to everyone, but I never knew that despite the breed difference, all dogs have the same scientific name, Canis lupus familiaris.

Or that cats could be infected with Feline AIDS.

You would need to wrap yourself in 39 layers of bubble wrap in order to survive falling out of a sixth storey window.

Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 when two men stuck two shower curtains together in an attempt to create a 3D plastic wallpaper!

Yep, all dogs are the same species as the grey wolf.

Also, cats can get infected by FIV. FIV gives them AIDS. :P

Is that what it takes to not die, or what it takes to not suffer an injury?

I'm just asking this because...

...Reasons...

Sleet is asking the specifics about layers of bubble wrap required to safely fall from a window because he/she clearly plans on attempting to break the world record for most eggs smashed with your head while crab-walking backwards. You can't fool me you silly fox.

And the Mythbusters tried the bubblewrap drop thing. They had to use so much that a person actually couldn't breath from the weight of the bubble wrap. And I don't think they were dropping them from very high at that point either.

Hrmmmm...okay I guess I see your logic here...if folks learn something new that they're not likely to use at any point in their lives it could be classed as useless information...
...though it should probably be a good idea that if someone wants to share something new they learned they reply to the "You Learn Something New Every Day" title now in this thread,
and any other generally useless information they got be put under the original "Useless Information" title. Sound good?

Apparently there's a country in the middle of Nevada. http://www.molossia.org/countryeng.html
Male bats have the highest rate of homosexuality of any mammal.
Giraffes and rats can last longer without water than camels.
More people are killed each year from bees than from snakes.
It is illegal to frown at cows in Bladworth, Saskatchewan.

That reminds me of the Principality of Hutt River (former Hutt River Province) in west Australia. (1) (2)
They also declared war on Australia in december 1977. But that was totally ignored by the Australian goverment as the Principality didn't had any forces, just on the papers an army, a navy and an air force were created, all 'soldiers' are unarmed.

I just think it's funny that Molossia has been at war with a country that doesn't exist anymore for over 30 years. That and the hours for their tiki bar and grill are pretty funny too.

There is a bit of a trick to it. You have to make it spin and you have to have the angle right. It's all in the wrist. ;)
I can't do it either but I can get it to go in a big arc .

Simon & Garfunkel wrote the songs "Punky's Dilemma" and "Overs" for the movie The Graduate, but director Mike Nichols didn't like them. The duo offered another new song, then titled "Mrs. Roosevelt", that was not as developed, and Nichols loved it.
