These expressions are so lovely. :D
Zach, you need to learn about using fannypacks instead of collars. More space and very fashionable.

Maybe he's just keeping it simple cause he's talking to Jessica. That or it's part of his persona. You know, he doesn't feel like he belongs there, and all that jazz.

Apparently Jessica hurt her arm. Poor thing.

I was right! They do use keys/locks in this universe.

You know, after re-reading Zach's dialogue from today's strip and comparing it to his dialogues from earlier arcs, I wonder if Zach isn't comfortable in his current environment and rather be either back where he first was or in the wild. If the former is the case, then interesting character development! Also, Jess must've hurt herself bad cause that red in the first panel...yeeowch!

He probably did it to prevent an argument between him and Jess over the terminology of biological and adopted parents.
Also congratulations on however guessed that trap needed a key.
How can a pet rabbit be mistaken for a pet when he is wearing a collar.
No wonder he could be mistaken if he completely covers it with a scarf.

Well, that explains the 'pop' in the last strip. Jess's shoulder...

Hopes raised, then hopes dashed
as Jess listens to her Zach.
In the cage in which they've crashed;
mud on his face, mud on her back.
They're trapped in a shipping crate,
ready to be sent who-knows-where.
Neither talking yet, of their fate.
Jess is dropping down to despair.
The night is long and freezing cold
as it drags out through the snow.
They may snuggle if they're feeling bold
and Cory may return... You never know...

Whew, so that trap doesn't mean immediate mortal peril for them, more a long journey. A long journey wet, cold and dirty, with probably an broken ankle and a broken arm...

Allright, maybe the peril they're in is greater on the second look :o

I think Zack still thinks of himself as the fifth wheel in the Arbelt household.

personally I think it's just the context.
In my RPs I have my characters use "Mom" and "Dad" when talking to them, but it feels awkward to have them refer to them as "my parents" or "my dad" or whatever when talking to others. I usually have them go with "owner" as Zach did.

He could be subconsciously distancing himself slightly to impress Jess/avoid Jess mocking him for calling his owner 'dad'.

I just realized.....our two heroes have a common enemy...

Someone insanely paranoid that Zach is taking his place....
Someone who would love nothing better than to get revenge on the Possum who made a fool of him in front of tens of people on cable access.....

Quick! Someone check and see if the trap is marked 'Express To Abu Dhabi'!

Are owners and pets entirely consistent about the way they describe the relationship? I can't imagine Duchess, for example, calling her owners "mom" and "dad".

Continuing Zach's particular brand of good luck....

Some Forrest animals arrive

Zach: "Ah, good! We're saved! Guys, open the cage!"
The animals start to, but then one says, "Wait! This is a test! The Opener wants to test our faith that he opens stuff!"
Zach: "What? ... No, really guys! I need you to open the cage!"
The animals all bow their heads around the cage. "We have faith in you, O Opener."
Zach: "No, really...I think I hear the human coming...please open the cage..."
Animals: "We have faith in you, O Opener."
Jessica: (shouting) "Open the #%}{]}#^*+%#}} cage!!!!!"
Animals: "We have faith in you, O Opener, as well as our faith in your foul mouthed disciple."
Zach face paws as Jessica glares at him.

What's worse is that I can definitely see that happening except, I see Jess killing the animals after she Hulk-Smashes on the cage!

Now I get it! In the Housepets! universe, their collars are little portals to Hammerspace. It's like having a Bag of Holding.

I love the expressions in this comic. The way Zach just states that he knows how to get out, then he remembers that he doesn't have what he needs to get out. :D They can bond over how forgetful Zach is. You'd think the Opener of Ways could OPEN a cage even without a key. :P Just giving Jessica something more to lecture him about.
Zach isn't getting any closer to a hug...

The collars are bigger on the inside :D

I want to see another pet come out of one now, or maybe fall into their collar. :P

Oh, wait...

Zach is so being a lucky rabbit. Great, that was a genial move, muddy sugarbun, you know. :P That sounds like a good thing, but do they use all the same kind of locks for cages? If not, they should be illegal in the HP! universe... The collar is the own document as a pet, never separate from it. :| Well Zach, now explain to Jessica how you "lost" it and prepare yourself to receive a deserved slap. :P Waiting to see what the evil Cory is planning. ;)

Perhaps this is some kind of "forceful humbling" scheme from someone else, with Jessica in on it?

I mean, someone could have hired the skunk and the magpie right? And why would they want the collar if all there was to gain was the key that'd ultimately help Zach out of his current and sudden predicament?

All that doesn't fit is the cage being at the end of a large fall, but it could have been a backup cage... A very painful backup cage, but regardless.
