Favorite Film of the Year (2010)
Well folks, this is it. Less than a week from 2011. Now is the time to reflect back on a whole year of happiness, sadness, joy, fear, and regret. More specifically, it's about the movies we say, and the movies we shared. So without further ado, I will start off the list with my personal favorite film of the year.
Inception, by Christopher Nolan.

Toy Story 3 is a close second.

My favourite was Toy Story 3, with How To Train Your Dragon as a runner up.

Either Inception or The Social Network.
Re: Favorite Film of the Year (2010)
I didn't watch any movies that came out this year. I can't be in theaters. They make me uncomfortable. I'll see them eventually and get back to you in, oh, let's say a year. That should be enough time for them to get discounted to a reasonable price.

It doesn't have to be a movie that came out this year. Just a movie that you saw for the first time this year.copper wrote:I didn't watch any movies that came out this year. I can't be in theaters. I liked Inception because I came into it knowing I wasn't supposed to fully understand it. I hate when movies throw big confusing plots at you out of nowhere, but with Inception I knew that was exactly what I was getting, so I could appreciate it.naylorfan90 wrote:Inception, by Christopher Nolan.

I came into Inception knowing nothing. I knew it was a big movie, and that people liked it. That's it. Not even the general plot. No preconceived notions whatsoever. And then it blew me away.

Mine is Rare Exports: a Christmas Tale. Evil Santa + Butchers from Finland= Epicness..... Inception was okay. I understood it, but they made it even more confusing every second. It didn't not work for me.
The second favorite of mine would be.... HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON! I only came to see the movie since I read the books. But even as awesome as this Hiccup was, I like the book version better. He thought of a pirate lord which was AWESOME in the book. Alas................

Well, if that's the case, then I'd have to say either Futurama: Bender's Game or Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder as a favorite. Second favorite? When Harry Met Sally. I didn't really see very many movies, and these are the only ones of note.naylorfan90 wrote:It doesn't have to be a movie that came out this year. That was really good, and not just by Harry Potter movie standards, it was a legitimate good movie. I think it was a great example of how to pace a movie adaptation of a book; clearly taking the time to fully adapt a long book (for example, dividing a film in two) is preferable to rushing through things and streamlining the plot to fill two hours (AKA almost all of the Potter Movies).Challenger01 wrote:Ummm... I agree completely. Compare The Half-Blood Prince, which was a (decently) good movie, but a bad Harry Potter movie.

Re: Favorite Film of the Year (2010)
Favorite movie of the year? Probably Inception. It does exactly what more movies need to do: Not treat the audience like idiots. I don't know how many people have read Gödel, Escher, Bach, but it covered many of the same themes: Recursion, popping in and out of "fantasies", intelligence, optical illusions, maybe music to a degree. If I had to choose only one movie this year to see in theaters, that would be it without a doubt.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was great (anyone who uses the Link to the Past soundtrack is awesome), maybe best script or something, maybe a visual effects award, but really now who cares about visual effects anymore (I don't know who else would get it, maybe I'm missing something), were making almost entire movies with photorealistic computer graphics. Actually I take that back, if you're a visual effects producer and the audience is saying "Wow that was awesome CG" you're doing you're job wrong (after all, no one ever says "Wow the audio was amazing!" it's just something that engineer is expected to do perfectly). Actually I'm not so sure even best script, that and best movie are somewhat linked together in my mind, unless the concept was great and acting or something else was distracting, it should be the same thing.
Yeah those two are the only ones worth mentioning. Harry Potter isn't "done" yet... I mean, take Lord of the Rings, why did Return of the King get all the awards? It wrapped up the story. We're waiting on Harry Potter 7 part II to do the same.

Are you kidding? I walked out of Tron: Legacy saying that the Soundtrack was incredible, and really had a major role in making that movie not incredibly boring. The other thing that helped made that movie not boring was the CG.thoughtwright wrote:Actually I take that back, if you're a visual effects producer and the audience is saying "Wow that was awesome CG" you're doing you're job wrong (after all, no one ever says "Wow the audio was amazing!" it's just something that engineer is expected to do perfectly).
I also walked out of Inception with the same feelings on the music. And if you want to clarify and mean the non music audio, then Repo! The Genetic Opera had notable use of sounds that helped make the movie better, and I and some friends commented on it.

Re: Favorite Film of the Year (2010)
I was thinking more along the lines of recording the dialog and music, instead of the contents itself, but yeah. If it's unusually good music, acting, scenery (even if computer-generated), etc, you would expect the audience to see that. To put it another way, they should be saying "Wow <X> creativity there was awesome!" not "Wow that camera move was awesome!" unless you're like me and actually do purposefully look for that stuff. With respect to audio I haven't seen Tron: Legacy but I can say that I have had such thoughts for Lost, using the white noise and such (that jet engine sound, I believe) for flashbacks when changing the setting or time, and minor variations on it for flash forwards/sideways/etc. Most people probably never even think of it it's so natural. Likewise, Scott Pilgrim was mostly done well, except for the part where Scott physically grabs the 1-up, it breaks a fourth wall of sorts, where one was already established (that certain graphics exist outside the movie).Senator_Sunburst wrote:Are you kidding? Same thing with Inception, with the mirror, you can't look into a mirror and not see yourself (though considering the context of the scene, I can't imagine how else it could have been done). Really minor insignificant stuff though.

Oh booyah. I just loved Tron: Legacy's soundtrack, and even bought it on iTunes right after I got home from seeing the movie. I've listened to it all the way through about five times since, and I have to say it has the best soundtrack of the year, in my opinion. Totally made the movie.Senator_Sunburst wrote:Are you kidding? No way man, shutter island was a normal 2 hours. Also, In district 9, I was able to over look all of the cursing because you could barely even tell when they were cursing because of their accents. Whereas Casino or Pulp fiction (also great movies) had endless amounts of perfectly audible cursing.Tha Housedog wrote:District 9 was okay, but there were far too many cuss words in it. Oh, and I forgot! I saw Scott Pilgrim last night! It was great. I loved every character (including Jason Schwartsman) But most of all, it made me love directer-writer Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead) even more!

You did love the characters? I found most of the "heroes" fairly unlikeable. The villains were pretty awesome though.

Toy Story 3. Ga'Hoole was a disappointment, and I haven't seen Inception, Tron: Legacy, nor How to Train Your Dragon yet. After seeing the first Tron film, I had high expectations for the second, but from what I've heard in the reviews, the film lacks a good story, something I've been wanting for a while. Inception looks awesome, and so does Dragon.

Not to buzz kill or anything but District 9 was a 2009 film. I would have put it as the best film for this year if it was.Sketcherofstuff wrote:District 9 and Inception were good too.
Re: Favorite Film of the Year (2010)
Interesting thing with Tron: Legacy. It's a generally accepted thing about cinema that the higher concept a movie's theme is, the simpler the story has to be for the audience to handle the concept. The inverse is also true; for example, a simple story of a single parent struggling to keep her family together and living has to rely on complex character relationships and interactions to be interesting. So with Tron: Legacy, it has to rely on a "simplistic" story to convey its theme of free information.zeroslash wrote:Toy Story 3. I don't know. I think it's because I read too many dang books, so I expect film makers to release book-quality films. I blame the media. I just viewed the whole thing as an excuse plot so they could provide fanservice to fans of the original as well as world-class visuals and sounds. I didn't really see the theme as very "high concept" at all, honestly.naylorfan90 wrote:Interesting thing with Tron: Legacy.
