i actually love how the fandom has taken silent background characters, and given them personalities, backstories, and gave them relationships between eachother

It really is pretty awesome.

Except for when the toy division, being separate from the cartoon division that listens to fans, makes up different names and stuff for the background ponies.

Isn't that what people did with the toys anyway back in the 80s? Ignore any officially established names, backgrounds, and personalities so as to create their own adventures? That's pretty much what we've done with the background ponies.

Amazing -and- totally unsettling at times. More so if they decide to do something with said background character and it nukes the created personalty. I personally was expecting a lot more fan rage when Studio B and Lauren sunk the idea of "Poor little Wunna" that the fandom had built around the 30 seconds of airtime she had gotten before her premiere ep. But after reading the ED stream comment thread, really only three fans seemed upset, the rest thought it was great.

Heck, I've seen fans get vocal and sharply divided when canon characters with tons of air time do something that doesn't completely fit in with the fandom's prespection of a character (Twilight Sparkle anyone?). For me it's when fans forget that they are -just- fans and turn into entitled whiny brats who threaten to throw tantrums that I really dislike fandoms.

I didn't keep up as much with MLP back then, but I'm pretty sure the fanwank was nowhere near as bad. FiM was like a nuke going off and a siren call to fanfic writers, artists and others.

It seems to be forgotten though that, for all intents and purposes, we are the people who established the characters of the background ponies. The makers of the show have given a few of them lines here and there, but beyond that, what character were they ever given in the show? What likes, dislikes, activities, friends, jobs? Has Lyra even spoken once?

No, seriously, has Lyra ever spoken in the show? I can't think of any times she has, someone throw me a bone here.
