You raise a good point Brawler...I just forgot American football uses hands often so there is a good chance of it being literal.

Do you guys call our footy (short for football) English football or just call it soccer?

Teh Brawler wrote: Football: Soccer, my guess. It makes more sense if you use the American version, since that involves more hand work, though.
This leads me to the topic of how America has a severely poor naming choice.

Soccer: Would make more since than American Football since sock means to punch someone, which is sort of equivalent to tackling.
Football: Would make more since than American Soccer because of obvious reasons, you can only use your feet. (And head if you choose to)

To be fair, I don't think we made up our measurement system. We just resisted the change to the metric system. Those of us in the science field are trying to fix that, but if there's anything I've learned, it's that the public is more powerful than scientists when it comes to things like this. Personally I think we should just skip the metric system and embrace the Planck revolution, but that might be pushing it.

Also, my post was just something that would make perfect sense to an American, but would cause a British person to think twice. When we hear "torch," we think "fire on a stick," which is a perfectly reasonable thing to burn yourself with. When we hear "football," we think that one sport where you primarily hold the ball with your hands, which is a perfectly reasonable sport to perform poorly at with a hand injury. Whereas burning your hand with a flashlight is silly, as is not being able to play soccer with an injured hand.

I will agree that your use of "football," makes more sense, but "flashlight" is better than "torch." Also, "colour" makes more sense than "color," but "theater" totally beats "theatre."

On the other hand you are very right, as I stated before, I didn't even think of the possibility of american football so I made no sence out of your sentance before.

Why do I think it would be horrendously difficult to play soccer while standing digitigrade? Something about balancing while kicking on your toes doesn't work all that well...

And the Metric system not only makes a ton more sense (all converting by tens), any scientist worth his salt uses it for calculations, since nearly every formula we have uses them. Particularly in physics, kilograms and (regular) meters are usually used for calculations...for...anything, really.

The only reason I still use the English measuring system is for visual reasons, since I grew up with it, and still see it everywhere. I know what an inch, foot, or yard looks like, and how long it is without looking at a ruler, but I can't for metric. And everything else is "miles per hour" or "a gallon of milk." It's annoying to have an extra step in a science problem where you look up a conversion factor (because most people don't memorize them) to get from 5 meters to whatever amount of yards. And then it's going to be some nasty decimal.

Why this confusion is necessary with measurements, I don't know.

All the inbreeding we do leads to birth defects, so we use units that are divided into denominations that aren't multiples of 10, to be sensitive to people who don't have 10 fingers.

3 teaspoons to a tablespoon
2 tablespoons to an ounce
8 ounces to a cup
2 cups to a pint
2 pints to a quart
4 quarts to a gallon

16 ounces to a pound
2000 pounds to a ton

Yep, two ounces, and they measure different things.

I've devised my own measuring system. In it, a pound is equivalent to a sterple. 8 sterples equal a qualt, 19 qualts equal a flebbin, and three flebbins equal a pokemon of your choosing.

Theater and theatre are both American words as well. Theater is the building for watching plays and movies, while theatre is the basic principles behind acting and stage development.

In that case I propose making a second 1/100,000 of a day instead of 1/86,400 of a day. That being the case, a minute would be 1/1000 of a day and an hour would be 1/10 of a day.

Guys, I use the English System, please stop calling it the 'stupid system.' Oh, and the current measurement of the second is based on oscillations of a cesium atom, so it's obviously the same for both SI and English Systems.

My entire post was deleted thanks to a slip of the mouse...

So americans use yards, feet e.t.c. No offence, but I find that oh so complicated...

Your pancakes for breakfast is one of the few things I am jealous about in America...
Image
It is rare to even eat pancakes for me, and USA seem to show these pancakes stacks all the time in cartoons. I swear, it is showing off to me...

Also, I'd rather not see any argument about the small differance in culture.
How could there be an argument anyway? I seem to be one of the few brits here, and I wouldn't touch that subject. Even through I don't understand...imperial measurements, I'm not about to say they are inferior or anything...

The typical stack of pancakes here is 3 high, and rarely strays from 2-5. Nonetheless, they are a pretty popular breakfast food here, assuming one has time/money to cook or go somewhere for breakfast.
