google "moo means moo" and look at the images and you getJeffCvt wrote:I once saw a picture with a weird translation.
A cow had just mooed and it had a subtitle with "moo" in it.
Then it said "Director's note: Moo means Moo"
I wish I could find it, but I wouldn't even know where to start...

well, the book was about it, I'm not sure that the parts they cut out of the movie weren't integral to making it about the same thing. That thing being, of course, something political, correct?
Re: Chat Thread 37: Diss Wants to Be Involved
As far as I know the adaptation is fairly faithful to the novel apart from which gas giant they visit and that Kubrick stripped down the ending to near incomprehensibility to be more artsy or so.

Weren't the book and film developed in tandem?Liam wrote:As far as I know the adaptation is fairly faithful to the novel apart from which gas giant they visit and that Kubrick stripped down the ending to near incomprehensibility to be more artsy or so.

Yepp. Kubrick thought by stripping it down he could create bigger ambiguity and "What the heck did just happened?" in an effort to make the alien powers more mysterious, more grandiose. The novel version was published after film release and both works were intended to complement each other.CaptainPea wrote:Weren't the book and film developed in tandem?
The reason why in the film the ship's destination is Jupiter and not Saturn as in the novel is that they couldn't get the rings right, btw.

They don't know the names of everyone they take in the pictures though, or do they? I dunno, also, I hate how people misnterperate Margaritaville, its not about having fun and getting drunk with friends. The song is about a man who drinks so much he dosn't get any pleasure from it, and its killing him, hence "Wasted away again in Margaritaville" he does it so much its not pleasurable, and he starts looking for people to blame for his problem hence "must be Buffet's fault" but finally he sees its his fault, not a woman's fault, not Jimmie's Fault, not Alan Jackson's fault, but his own, "Its our own muffins and cookies fault." Its a sad song.

and yet, he made a chain of restraunts based around the song, where people can go to drown their problems just like the guy in the song. A bit weird, isn't it?
trivia from Wikipedia: The song was written for Elvis, but he died before he could record it.

Maybe he specifically created it to punish people who thought it was supposed to be a happy song by saying that the restaurant would give you a similar experience to the song, so those who thought that meant happiness would find themselves lead into an ironic understanding from which they could not return

I think you meant to use "led," unless the negative experience includes a gentleman named Bruno who wields a pipe.

My guess is because money, I feel like he doesn't just want to cash in on the name, he feels like an honest musician if you ask me, but you got to scratch out a living, so its understandable.CaptainPea wrote:Maybe he specifically created it to punish people who thought it was supposed to be a happy song by saying that the restaurant would give you a similar experience to the song, so those who thought that meant happiness would find themselves lead into an ironic understanding from which they could not return

Why didn't he just start the Jimmy Buffet
Jimmy Buffett never quite understood the idea of ironic punishment

Do you mean "Life is a ride"?

Yes.McFly wrote:I wanna say Bill Hicks, but I could be wrong.
"The World is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real, because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round, and it has thrills and chills and is very brightly colored, and it's very loud. And it's fun, for a while.
Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they've begun to question, 'Is this real, or is this just a ride?', and other people have remembered, and they've come back to us and they say 'Hey, don't worry. Don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride.' and we KILL THOSE PEOPLE.
"Shut him up! We have a lot invested in this ride! SHUT HIM UP! Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account, and my family. This just has to be real."
It's just a ride.
But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that. You ever noticed that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter, because ... It's just a ride.
And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear wants you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead see all of us as one.
Here's what we can do to change the world right now, to a better ride:
Take all that money we spent on weapons and defense each year and instead spend it feeding, clothing, and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and WE CAN EXPLORE SPACE, TOGETHER, BOTH INNER AND OUTER, forever ... in peace."

I prefer to think of life as a highway.

It's direct to DVD and being produced by mainland Disney if I understand it right though
For those who aren't aware they're making Cars except instead of cars they're planes so they're calling it Planes.
