Spaghettification is the scientific term for having your atoms ripped apart sue to the immense gravitational pull once you pass the event horizon of a black hole. The event horizon is the point at which nothing, not even light can escape from the black hole's immense gravitational pull.

De Havilland Comet 4 was the first jet airliner to perform a scheduled passenger transatlantic flight on October 4th, 1958, for BOAC.
Yes, that is about the best thing to write that I could think of.

Kubrick's 2001 was the first movie with corporate product placements, displaying the logos of Pan-Am, Hilton Hotels, Bell Telephones, and IBM.

Leave It To Beaver in 1957 became the first television show to show a toilet. This was during a scene where the boys were hiding an alligator in the cistern. But they made sure to only show the cistern becuase to show the rest would have been too controversial and offensive.

Slipstream was a rare Sega racer from 1995. At it's most basic, it was Pole Position, but looked more fancy and featured a slipstream tactic. Like Pole Position, it used scaling sprites to achieve a "3-D" effect.

There is a point on top of Victoria Falls called the "Devil's Pool" where during the dry season one can swim within feet of the lip of the falls with the water still cascading over due to a naturally occuring rock barrier just beneath the surface.

I Love Lucy was the first sitcom to feature an interracial couple. It was not controversial at the time, however, because then Hispanics were not treated as a different race from Caucasians.Hlaoroo wrote:Leave It To Beaver in 1957 became the first television show to show a toilet. The rhea of South America, ostrich of Africa, emu of Australia and kiwi of New Zealand are closely related order of flightless birds. They all stem from the ratites that existed when these land masses were still part of a larger super-continent Gondwanaland.

3888 is the largest number expressable using standard Roman Numeral notation (MMMDCCCLXXXVIII).
This is Graham's number, the largest number ever used in a mathematical proof. It is too large to be expressed as scientific notation.

It is near impossible to get a deck of cards to shuffle exactly the same way, as the equation is 52! and the number is to long for me to bother typing it.

We only need about 39 digits of pi to accurately calculate the volume of the known universe to a single atom. Practically, the rest of the digits of pi could be used to test supercomputers or algorithms.

Due to electromagnetic forces in your atoms repelling other atoms you can never actually touch anything - that is to say, you can't make your matter touch other matter.

Re: Useless Information Thread
You're not likely to get fusion happening between your fingertips and the tabletop. For that you need thousands of degrees of heat and heaps of pressure.
Re: Useless Information Thread
Philo T. Farnsworth, one of the inventors of television, may have achieved fusion with a device he invented in the '30s.

The repelling force between two protons is so strong that even the forces in the sun are not enough to achieve fusion. The reason it's still burning is because the high temperatures raise the chances of a proton spontaneously quantum tunneling into another enough to be significant. This is why fusion is so hard to achieve on earth.

In 2008, the Royal Shakespeare Company held a performance of Hamlet starring David Tennant. For the performance, Tennant used an actual human skull, that of pianist André Tchaikowsky who donated his body to science and his skull to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I actually did not know that! I just assumed the sun was hot enough to cause hydrogen fusion in the conventional sense.Obbl wrote:The repelling force between two protons is so strong that even the forces in the sun are not enough to achieve fusion. Re: Useless Information Thread
A line of dialogue in Monkey Business (Marx Brothers film, 1931) coincidentally seems to foreshadow Thelma Todd's death.
Alone with Todd in her cabin, Groucho Marx quips: "You're a woman who's been getting nothing but dirty breaks. Well, we can clean and tighten your brakes, but you'll have to stay in the garage all night."
In 1935, Todd died in her car inside a garage, apparently from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

That's assuming they have the unstable K isotope then and not the regular K. I had not thought of that. Brings back all my highschool physics.

Based on the relative abundance of the isotopes of Potassium, the average banana emits a positron every 75 minutes. This promptly hits an electron and annihilates producing 0.511 MeV gamma rays that are easily detected.

Re: Useless Information Thread
Considering their charge is opposite to matter, that wouldn't be why. But regardless, the particles have to actually come in contact, and molecules tend to be neutral so there's no significant net electromagnetic force except on the microscopic level. Additionally, for an unknown reason there's more matter than antimatter in the observable universe so even if all the antimatter around annihilated, we'd still have matter. Also cancer. Ringo Starr was in the bathroom when the Beatles started recording "Hey Jude", but the others didn't notice because his drum booth was separated from the rest of them. The intro without drums wasn't intentional, and Ringo joined in once he managed to get back to his drums without disturbing the recording.
