huh, how did i miss THAT?
eenyhoo, did you redo the terrain too? cause half he reason for the shading style on the originals was fitting in with stock tile sets.
also you got the new sheets handy? i'd like to see em.

No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
We ended up adding a filter to the terrain that made the default tiles look more like the Housepets! cartoony lineart and shading style, and then put that on the sprites. However I've since found disstaste in that style as it's far to difficult to implement and edit (also requires using gimp) and I like the more flat cartoony look. So I'll be making new tiles for the game instead along with these sprites.
I'll send you V2 and V3 (current) of the sprite sets. I'm reluctant to make them public now'n days because I don't want people taking them and editing them for their own game to sell or something claiming it's their work. I'll also be using these sprites as a base for future games including my own.

Much of this part of development was within a private chat within the Semi-Official Discord channel, so I think this is the first time these sprites were publicly shown.Buster wrote:huh, how did i miss THAT?

Ahh! I played the old demo and I really enjoyed it, I'm kinda hyped for more to play of it!

Glad you're enjoying it!
Well, as can be seen, things are going at a snails pace. We have a new spriter as Chaoko is unable to dedicate too much time to it due to other projects. We are now making completely original tilesets in order for the entirety of the game to look more like the comic. It's slow, but coming out rather nicely.

That sounds cool. I played through it a while ago. Out of curiosity, what are you supposed to do after you go to Tarot's in the Halloween version?

Escape back to the Sandwich house. There'll be a brief text event, then interact with the hole.

I saw a let's play of this (yes, there's a handful), and one guy I think ran around for almost an hour before he realized he could interact with the hole. Granted, nothing really conveyed that you could.
And he doesn't talk here, so he never saw our earlier explanations.

Yeah, I feel like it would have been more obvious if the other rifts had an interaction. Even if it's just descriptive text: "A large rift reveals an endless dark abyss"
Or something like that.
The ending(s) were neat though.

We'll definitely keep you in mind then. Ever since the engine switch and most of the team members getting more important real-life priorities, progress is as good as halted. We at least got a new music composer and spriter.

You don't need to get a discord account. Any major progress gets mentioned here. Just note that it will probably be a while before anything new happens just because everyone's been busy

The demo seems kind of lacking.

We moved from RPG Maker VX Ace to RPG Maker MV. It allowed for bigger, more comic-accurate sprites and very slightly animated enemy portraits. The Halloween Demo I made last month is in this engine.
Do note, due to the fact that several original characters will appear throughout the game and that even canon characters will take a significant amount of time to find and clean to match, character portraits are expected to be removed from the game. Not a decision I was happy with, in all honesty, but at the moment, that's the way it's going to be.

Demo thread. The Halloween demo was me having fun, but deciding to make a connection. It's not necessarily "canon," but I designed it so that it might be considered as such if one wanted to.
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Hey y’all.
Let’s not beat around the bush, things are obviously at a halt. Much of our needs at the moment are art assets. We have one individual doing the spriting now, which is already an inefficient way of doing things, and no battler artist as he has more important priorities now.
The choice of making an entirely new sprite set to match the comic, while a good idea, is going to be a long one, even with a decent team. We’ve had to deal with more important priorities in our personal lives, obstacles that ended up presenting themselves even when time was available, or the lack of the needed skills to aid those already trying what they can.
That’s why I’m posting this as a recruitment call. We need spriters and artists. Character sprites mostly have bases that can be used, so that should be relatively simpler. Artists, on the other hand, have their work cut out for them. They’d need to emulate the comic’s style, which I understand is asking for a lot, even more so considering the number of OCs that exist to aid the players.
Should you be interested, leave a comment here, and we’ll start talking.

Well, tried my hand at spriting, and I must say, I'm surprised with how they came out.
Made these entirely on my own;
Made these by editing existing MV assets;
And even managed to figure out animations, surprisingly enough; We're still open for volunteers.

Wow those have really came out incredibly nice! Wonderful job on them!
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
So, I've been very slowly working on various sprites in various methods.
Sucre, Sale, and the boss, Tybalt.
Alec, Blanc, and a masked Blanc, as since she's albino, she'd need sun protection.
Another boss, Dingerpeaje. I need to make a variant wearing a trenchcoat, but I haven't figured out clothes yet.
Trying out repeating tiles. This made me nervous, considering their complexity, but I was surprised by how it ended up coming out. They're supposed to be debris from dams.
Cars. Side view is traced, back view is original.
Phones, partially traced.
Empty Mana pedestal, completely original.
Mailbox, completely original.
Traced broom.

I know this request its old, but I don't frequent this part of the forums much. I guess it's lucky the last new post was made when it did. Anyway, Is the offer still open? I don't think I'd be able to emulate the comic's style from scratch to be an artist. I do, however have experience making sprites and would be interested in helping out in that regard.D-Rock wrote:Hey y’all.

Fair point. I'll see about compiling a character list as soon as I can. It's really late on my end.

That's El Fin's sprite you're using. First, I thought of her wearing pants and cloak, then you thought of her wearing a jumpsuit, and now a trenchcoat, eh? Wonder how this will fit into her blood knight persona?Another boss, Dingerpeaje. I need to make a variant wearing a trenchcoat, but I haven't figured out clothes yet.
Glad to see the project is ongoing.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
actually, it's a derivation of one of mine (rocky completely changed the shading), that in turn was based on a free-to-use template (albeit with the head completely reworked, modified shading to look less skin-like, tails added, and the feet had to be made more pawlike) i found on an RPG maker site. while it's possible the original might be based on the work of whoever El Fin is (though i would assume the template changed something since they don't mention this person, and claiming something in an un-altered form would be rude among other issues), it's undergone enough changes that i'd question whether it still counts.kavviyenta wrote:That's El Fin's sprite you're using.

No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
I apologize for the confusion. "El Fin" is the name of the character shown. For some reason I'm not sure of, I was thinking of another of Kavviyenta's character submissions, who goes by Dingerpeaje. What I did was take the Sasha sprite that was already made for the style, and make the necessary recolors and edits. Even went so far as to mirror the sprites to have another difference, and to cheat at making her ears different. As for the clothes, well, I already said that I'm no good at them. the "jumpsuit" was a fail in every regard. Well, pants and cloak at least gives me a possibly easier thing to worry about.
Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
Decided to try out making more characters that aren't necessarily simply recolors. Here's a start at Bino. I'll probably use this as a base for Joey.
Thoughts?

Re: Housepets! Tails of Babylon! * Developer's Thread *
So, after posting the Bino sprites on the Discord, Chaoko informed me that we already had Bino sprites.
So I used what we already had to make Joey, as I thought it was better.
